A SOLDIER'S CONTRIBUTIONS) THE SUFFERING. The British' Embassy in Tokio <has r received the following letter from a private soldier in. the Japanese Army wlio is now serving against the aborigines in Formosa: — "Respectfully unfold myself as follows:—I hava written to you as to my, intention of contributing a 6mall mim . of money towards .the association form*, ed to give relief to the bereaved famii- ■ les of disabled or dead soldiers, and I ■ thank you for the trouble you have 1 taken in favouring me with a reply. ! "™ om the kog'nfling I fixed the sum , K) yen (£1), but when I applied to the captain to get payment of my sav- . ings lie told me various details and . determined tho amount to bo 4 yen (Bs.). Trifle as the amount is, it iB my. ■ sincere hope you will go through the , necessary process of contribution. ''I am simply a soldier. Before I was enlisted a certain English lady did a ; lot for men in various ways. Since j then I have read some books and have j been struck with tfhe fact that the Bri- [ tish POB6OSS a rich public morality and many qualities which distinguish a' r great people. > "The year before last I was in the military hospital for 20 days. It waß • then that I deeply pondered over the kindness of the English lady whom I t had met in Tokio some years ago, and ; all the suffering I have endured in the expedition has given me an overwhelm- . ing sympathy towards the bereaved : families of dead soldiers and those dis- ■ abled. Even if the least member of adisabled or dead soldier could be helped through my small contribution, no joy [ could bo greater to me than this. "I bow my head respectfully to you . and bid you good-bye. ; "TEIZABURO NADA.'* / —Central News.
