After having been laid up in Wellington 1 for several months the -Union Company'* ! old favourite ferry steamer MaraToa. if about to be recommissioned. At preseni sho is berthed at Clyde Quay Wharf, undergoing a thorough overhaul and refitting, It is the intention, to place the Maxaroe once again in tho intercolonial service, and she will relieve the Navua in a few weeks' time in tho Sydney-Auckland running. Th€ latter vessel will relieve tho Maheno pre tem.^ This is not the first time that the "old favourite pride of tho fleet" as she was known, has been engaged in the intercolonial service. Many .years ago 6he ran between Wellington and Sydney and Auckland and Sydney. Later she "was engaged in the ferry searvice between Wellington and Lyttelton, and for eome years sho ran in conjunction with tho Rotomahana. Tie latter vessel was replaced by the Maori, and the Mararoa maintained the service with her till the arrival of the Wahine in 1913. Since then the Mararoa has not been continuously engaged in any service. She is a single screw steamer of 2598 tons, and was built at Dumbarton in 1885. FROM VANOOUVER DIRECT. An arrival in port from Vanoouver direct yesterday afternoon waa the Union. Company's big cargo-carrier Wairuma. 'After pratique had been granted by the Port Health Officer the vessel berthed at the Queen's Wharf No. 6 to discharge 840 tons of general cargo. On the run down from tho Pacific Slope fine weather was experienced, and the trip proved uneventful. Tho Wairana will receive cargo up till noon to-day for Melbourne, for which port 6he la expected to take her departure at 3 p.m. Captain Norton is.still in command, and has the following officers associated with him:—Chief, Mr.- S. Peterson; second, Mr. V* 8. Siepen; third, Mr. J. S. Sangster (late of the Westmeath). ASAMA. IEARU DUE SUNDAY. With a part lo<ad of lumber and case-oil tho Japanese steamer Asama Mai*u left Auckland in continuation of her journey from San Francisco and Gray's Harbour to Wellington at 3.35 p.m. yesterday. Given favourable weather, she should show up hero in time to commence discharge first thing on Monday morning. PAPAROA AT HOBART. ' Advice has been received by the local office of the Now Zealand Shipping Com*pany stating that the Paparoa had arrived at Hobart from Plymouth at 1 p.m. on June 3. She was to have sailed for Auckland yesterday afternoon, and is expected to arrive at the northern port on the morning of Thursday, June 10. ATHENIO LEAVES' THE OAPE. According to advice received by the head office of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company their steamer Athenic, which is en route from London to Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Port Chalmers, continued lior journey from Cape Town ok June 2. "Shipping World," a leading English shipping paper, states that the steel shelterdeck steamer Morayshire, 5893 tons gross, built at Newcastle in 1898 by Messrs. R. and W. Hawthorn, Leslie, and Co., Ltd., classed 100 Al Lloyd's, engines 29i, 46J, and 765 by 54in, stroke, fitted with refrigerating machinery and insulated for tho carriage of frozen meat, dimensions 420 ft. by 54ft. by 28ft. fiin., owned by tho F. and S. Line, London, has been sold to the' Blue Star Lino, and renamed Brodliffe. Tho late Morayshire was weU known in the Now Zealand trade, having maintained tho service between Liverpool and this port, in nonfunction with other steamers of tho same line for a considerable number of years. After a good weather passage the Hud-' dart-Parker steamer Wimmera arrived at Wellington from Melbourne and Hobart direct late yesterday afternoon. . Subsefluently the vessel berthed at tho Queer's WhaTf No. 2 to land cargo and will sail for southern ports, Hobart, and Melbourne at 5 p.m. to-day. PACIFIC- SLOPE TRADE DEVELOPING. The Union Company announces that the following steamers have been fixed to load sn the Pacific Coast for New Zealand and Australian ports:—The Waitemata is to leave San Francisco about the end of June for Auckland, Wellington, and Sydney. Tho Waimarino (late Wyandotte) is to leave the Pacific Coast about July 6 for Anckland, Melbourne, and Sydney. The Waihemo late Canada. Cape) was due at Vancouvor >n Monday from Australian ports. This rcssel will load at Vancouver and $an Pranclsco, and sail about the middle of this nonth for Wellington, Sydney, and MelDoume. The Wairuna arrived at Welline>on yesterday from Vancouver, and will i.fterwards go to Melbourne and Sydney to jomplete her discharge. She will -subseluentl'y return to Vancouver. The Japan>so steamer Hokai Maru has been chartered to load on the Pacific Coa6t in July or Australian ports only. 'Another rapanese steamer, the Asama Maru, is at present in New Zealand waters. ! It has been rumoured that the Asama 1 tfaru is the first shin of a Japanese line riiich is to inaugurate a regular monthly iervice between the Pacific Ooast and New Zealand ports. The Auckland agents for ,he Asama Maru state (according to the 'New Zealand Herald"), however, that no nformation has been received of another :ompany entering into the Pacific Coast &rgo trade. The Asama- Maru has been bartered for this voyage only. Another rapanese steamer has already discharged argo at Wellington from San Francisco in hehalf of tho Union Company. STEAMERS SOLD. Tho Northern Steamship Company has old the steamer Kapui, 59 tons, t-o Messrs. 'oues and Company. Wliangarei. The vesel was towed to Whangarei by the Baden'owell on Tuesday night, and she will be cfitted there, and used for fishing purloses. The' Kapui was built in Auckland n 1912. 1 a frequent visitor to Wellington. Ehe was originally owned by the New Zealand Shipping Company, and., traded, between the Dominion and Home porta for 6everal yeara. The vessel ivas subsequently purchased by the Huddart-Parker Lino, and alter trading, under tho house flag of that company for several years, she was acquired by the Union Steam Ship Company. 6ho was employed for some time iu tho old Tancouver-Brisbane-Sydney mail eervieo, ■ and then the Sydney-Auckland-San Francisco mail service. Latterly she was employed in tho Sydney-Wollineton-fi an Francisco Bervice, hiving been withdrawn about August of last year. On inquiry at tho local office of the Union Company no information could be gathered in regard to the above statement. Shortly before 9 a.m. yesterday the New Zealand Shipping Company's big cargocarrier Euapehu left Wellington for London, via t Monte Video. Following the 0. and D. liners Whakaxna and C. 8, the Port Phillip will be tho noxt steamer to leave New York under tho auspices of the lino for New Zealand ports, I via Panama. The Shaw-Savill liner Mamori will arrive at Wellington front Lytteltan to-day in order to fill up prior to failing for Homo from this port on June 10. It is expected that the steamer XTauroto, now completing overhaul at Auckland, will leave for Sydney and Hong-Kong next week. Tho funnel, which boro the familiar red and black colours of the Union Company, has been repainted a jet black. As the Tarawora had been considerably delayed at Gisborric by bad weather sho did not arrive at Wellington till late yesterday. Consequently departure woe not taken for southern ports till a late hour last evening. The collier Kaituna left Wellington for Greymouth last evening to'load for Sydney and, Melbourne. The vessel wiU proceed thence to Adelaide and Edilhburg to pick up salt and gypsum for tho llluff, Oamaru, and Timaru. ' When the Anchor Line's cargo-carrier Kennedy has discharged her freight of 4000 eases of apples for transhipment to tho " ilamari at Wellington to-day, she will return to Motueka to pick up another full " t load, being due back hero on Tuesday next.
