MAKING IT EASY

YOUNG MAN'S GENEROUS OFFER TO HIS MOTHER. ;

An authentic story of a young countryman's practical patriotism comes;to us (says the Wangamii "Chronicle") from a district not many miles from us. "he young fellow, who had by thrift and prudenco placed himself in a sound financial position, conceived it to bo his duty to go to the front. He offered his services and was duly accepted. Iu the same locality there were a number of other young men, mates of tho ono who had enlisted, and all eligible for service. Very' properly, ho suggested that they ought to follow his example, but, while professing to bo desirous of doing as their mate had done, they all explained their reasons which mado it difficult for them to do so. Pressed to state the nature of their reasons, thoy wero for the most part unablo to stato any more - serious obstacle to their enrolling than, the fact that thoy owed money to certain people, and wero reluctant to go away- in debt. They must have been surprised when their patriotic comrade rejoined, "Well boys, don't let that stop yon from drying your duty. Give me your bills, and I will settle them for you, and, v/hat'fl more, 111 give you each a 'fiver' on-top of it. And now the settlers of tho district are waiting with 110 little curi°sity to 6eo whether this generous offer will bo accepted.
