FIRE! FIRE

EXCITEMENT ON THE WHARF. "Break tha alarm, there is a fire in A shed," excitedly cried a Harbour Board official shortly after 9.30 last night to a gentleman who happened to bo near one of the red fire alarm boxes. In a. trice the glass door of the box was shattered and a finger pressed the little button to alarm the firo brigade.. "Fire! Fire!" shouted tlw stranger in his excitement. "Fire! Fire!" the Harbour Board official yelled, and the cry was takon up by seamen on the different ships, the nightwatchmen, the police, and the othor Harbour Board officials. The wharf was instantly galvanised into activity and excitement. _ All this stir was created in exactly a, minute and a half, and in that time the fire brigade had reached the scene. A business-like fireman was soon asking where tho fire was. Investigations were promptly made and it was discovered that the supposed fire originated in A shed where some of the occupants were preparing for supper by 'heating a kettle over an extra large gas ring. As the kettle was taken, off the ring the bright dancing light was reflected on the' shed window, and the Harbour Board official mistook this for an outbreak of firo. The excitement on the wharf was intense, but of 6'hort duration.
