— 9 The members of tho French Club held their usual weekly meeting on Thursday evening. In the absence of a gentleman who was cxpectod to give a lecture, Mr. Cooke, at short notice, filled his placo, and gave a Iccture 011 "A Visit to Brazil and tho Virgin Forest." Mr. Cooke described his experiences ill visiting Para, a town in northern Branil, near the river Amazon, the collection of india-rubber, and tho preparation of Bomo other products, namely, coffee, tobacco, and particularly tapieca. He spoke of the marvellous extent of forest in that part ©f the world, and showed how little had been douo by tbo settlers to clear any of it, contrasting this with the energy displayed by settlors in New Zealand. Messrs. Adamson and Hodson gave readings from a work entitled "Coeurs Russes."
