SOCIAL & PERSONAL

At Nswtown Park. If the men who are fighting at the Dardanelles :it the present time could have seen the way in which Wellington people were working for their benefit yesterday they would possibly have been inspired to do even greater things than tliey have already done. Tho whole of the proceedings from the beginning to tho end of the day was a striking manifestation of the way in which people are determined that the sacrifice of those who have gone to the front will not be allowed to pass without something at least being done in return.

Tho procession was wonderfully fine and utterly outdistanced in variety and beauty anything of the kind that has previously been held. Naturally the Queen candidates who took their share ill tho procession were the centre of much attention, and were surrounded by bevies of their supporters. What with tiie decorated buildings, flags everywhere, and the infinite variety of the fancy drosses that masqueraded about, as well as the gorgeous colouring that formed so striking a feature of tho procession, Wellington was ablaze with all the hues of tho rainbow.

Up at the Park the scene was even more kaleidoscopic, thousands and thousands of people arriving by tram mid motor, while all over the ground were groups of girls dressed as pierrettes, fairies, peasants, and men in all sorts of fancy costumes, weird and otherwise, while everywhere were flags. Tho various stalls and booths, of which there was a very great number, offered an infinite variety of attractions, and were thronged during the whole of the afternoon. The fortune-tellers' tents and booths for refreshment were in charge of the following:—Committee: Miss Waters (secretary). Mesdames chatfield, T. G. lkillie.'W. J. Millar. Sivall, H. W. White, H. Gamble and Creed had given all the refreshments, their own and staff's services, for the day at tho kiosk.
