His Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. Pi Luke) lias, through His Excellency th« Govornor. sent the following message to His Majesty King Goorge: "Loyal congratulations from the Mayor, councillors, and citizens of Wellington." The Prime Minister (the Bight Hon. \V. F. Massey) left Auckland yesterday to return to Wellington. The Rev. 11. G. Rosher, late Vicar of Palmerston, is leaving with his family for England by the Ruapehu to-day. Mr. James Mackenzie, 1.5.0., is suffering at present from a severo attack of influenza. Drs. Hazlett and Myers, of the Wellington Hospital staff, have volunteered for active service in the New Zealand Medical Corps. Mr. G. Ritchie, of the Union Company, arrived in Wellington from tlio south by tho Maori yesterday. Mr. F. W. Humphries, Mayor of the Oamaru branch of the Union S.S. Company, arrived in Wellington from the south yesterday. Sir. Sweeney,, of the Pahiatua Post Office staff, has been transferred to Wanganui. Mr. P. S. Iv. Mncassey, of Wellington, lias been visiting Dunedin. The following resolution was passed by the Canterbury Rugby Union at its last meeting:—"The members of this committee desire to extend their profound sympathy to the lelatives of their comrades, F. L. Sapsi'ord, T. L. Burns, J. H. Aitken, E. G. Smith, and R. B. Turner, all of whom have given their lives fighting at tlm Empire's call for justice and humanity. Whilst their loss is irreparable, the members liopo that tho relatives will derive some consolation from the fact that tliey have made a name and gained a glory alike imperishable."
Private J. H. Aitken, killed in tho Dardanelles, was a member of the firm of Aitken Bros., sharebrol;ers,_ Christchurch, and manager of the Northern Insurance Company in that city. Ho was at one time captain of tho Queen's Cadets. At Christ's College and Canterbury College, where ho was educated, lie upheld the prestige of his collego very successfully. He was a member of the 'Varsity first fifteen, and only relinquished Riigbyi through the demands of business on his spare time. He was one of the best- mile and half-mile and cross-country runners Canterbury ever had. After giving up active athlotics he became secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association.
