A LIVELY MOMENT
A hint of the tone of America's rejoinder to Germany's Note in defence of the submarine attacks on neutral shipping generally and on the Lusitania particularly, is given in the news from "Washington today. There is to be no further bandying of words with the German Foreign Office, .and any delay in reply will, it is stated, mean a rupture of diplomatic relations, after which America will consider the position. A late message from tho Eastern theatre relates that the Germans, by tremendous effort-s, managed to gain a footing in the precincts of one of the forts at Przemysl, but were driven out with heavy losses. There has been violent fighting in Poland, tho enemy resorting to asphyxiating gases. Over 10,000 Austro-German prisoners have been sent to tho Russian rear as the result of the recent fighting. In Gallipoli the Turks managed to break through the Allies lino, and were surrounding them when a warship, hurrying up, dispersed the enemy, with heavy losses. Tho operations of British submarines in "the Sea of Marmora have caused a panic in Constantinople, and suspended the transport of troops. Two troopships, carrying reinforcments for the Dardanelles, wero blown up. Tho now* from the Italian theatre is in the nature of progress reports. There is also a dispatch from Mr. Martin Donolioe on the recent fighting on tho Austro-Italian frontier. From the Western theatre the news is encouraging: Thu French advance north of Arras has been maintained, and further successes are recorded. The French plan of campaign has been long and carefully prepared, and tho first fruits havo already been gathered. Mr. F. T. Jane, the well-known naval writer, submits an interesting theory in explanation of the recent mysterious explosions at Sheerness, namely that a wireless devico of the Germans was used to blow up tho Bulwark and tho Princess Irene.
