mental patient hangs himself. A mental patient at the Porirua Asvlum committed suicide yesterday by hanging himself. Deceased was a young man named- Geo. Mitchell, and he had no relatives in New Zealand. Yesterday afternoon Mr. W. G. RiddeU, S.M. held an inquest into the death of deceased, and evidence was given to show that he was a quiet patient, with no suicidal tendencies. He was quite amenable to discipline, and about 11 45 a.m. yesterday was doing some polishing work. At tho meal hour the attendant in charge of the patients told him to put his polishing brushes away, and he did that. The attendant went to call the other patients, and was away about ten or twelve minutes. When he returned another patient called him over to one of the lavatories, where he found Mitchell suspended by a strap round his neck. The attendant cut the body down ; and called two doctors. Artificial respiration was tried for about half an hour, but without any result. The verdict returned was that deceased had committed suicide by hanging himself, and the Coroner added a rider that no blame was attachable to the attendants. BODIES IDENTIFIED. ' j The body of the man found near Run Round, Island Bay, on Saturday has been identified by the Rev. W. H. Walton as that of John W. Kalph, aged about 50 years. Deceased has no relations in Now Zealand, but is said to have received a remittance from a brother in Australia. The body found in tho hush at Karori has been identified as that of Matthew Byrus Tollhurst, wliarf labourer, who resided at Mrs. Hill's, 42 Wallace Street. He was last seen alive by Mrs. Hill on February 9 last. Inquests will be' held oil both bodies at a date to be fixed this week. FALL FROM A WINDOW. k man named Adam Bone was admitted to the Hospital last night suffering from the effects of a fall from a window. The man was first taken to the Mount Cook Police Station where he received medical attention. A FATAL SUP. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Dunedin, June 1. While loading sacks on to a lorry at Messrs. Dalgety and Co's store this afternoon, John M'Carthy, a married man, living at Burns Street, Caversham, slipped and fell on his head, striking a concrete, floor. The side of his head was severely cut; and he was at once taken to the Hospital, where he died shortly after admission. M'Carthy was about- 38 to 40 years of age, and met with the accident on the second day of employment wila Dalgety and Co.
