The directors of the Broken Hill Companies, operating in conjunction with the Port Pirie smelters, have d<v I cided temporarily to reduce the output, closing the concentrating mills in alternate weeks. Between four and five thousand men will be affected. A special meeting of the Amalgamated Miners' Association has discussed the situation, and also a demand by the Port Pirie men for an increase in wages. It was decided to ask for a conference with the owners. I A SYDNEY TRAGEDY. MAN SHOOTS HIS LANDLADY(Rec June 1, 7.15 p.m.) Sydney, June 1. A tragedy has occurred in Riley Street. A tailor named Harry Lewis shot his landlady, Mrs. Annie Stern, and then himself. Both are dead. Jealousy was the cause, and the finale came after frequent quarrels arising from Mrs. Stern rpsenting tht tailor's undesired attentions. ANTI-CERMAN MOVEMENT IN SYDNEY. TROUBLE IN GLASSWORKS. Sydney, June 1. As the result of the employment of a number of Germans, six hundred employees at the Sydney and Waterloo Glassworks have 6truck. Tlie Germans are expert blowers, mostly naturalised, have been in the employ of the companies for years, and are members of the union. The management points out that the putting off of the Germans means renaering idle many others, because it will be impossible to replace the experts. The company has decided not to employ any Germans whose work Britishers are able to do ; The employees of the Neuchatel Asphalt Works, which supply the City Council, have struck because two Germans were employed. The management states that the Germans are naturalised and married to Australian women, and that they have been employed for many years. The men have laid their caso before the council. THE LIBERAL DEFEAT IN QUEENSLAND. STATEMENT BY THE EX-PREMIER. Brisbane, June 1. The ex-Premier, Mr. Denham, on leaving office, made a statement to the Press. He said that one cause of the Liberal defeat was the attitude of the Public Service because it had not received increases owing to the war; another was the unfounded utterances regarding the responsibility of the Liberals for the high cost of living.
