TOWN HALL RENT

AND PATRIOTIC BOXING

CITY COUNCIL CRITICISED

The action of the City Council in refusing tho tree use of the Town flail to the \\ cllingion Uoxing Association lor a patriotic mooting on June 10 was criticised ai ; the mooting of thy association last night. The City Council's resolution was to the effect that the free use of the hall would be given, provided all services wore i'ree, but as this would mean that professional boxers could not be engaged, the concession was oi no use to the Boxing Association.

The chairman (Mr. K. M'Villy) referred to the notice of motion standing in Councillor Frost's name to rescind the council's resolution, provided 50 per cent, of the gross takings went to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. llio secretary (Mr. Talbot) said that it; had been made clear that if there was a nood surplus to hand to the Patriotic 1' und. that the council would donate the rent of tho hall. They did not want all tho takings eaten up. Mr. M'Villy: "The whole thing resolves itself into this: The Boxing Association is desirous of assisting the patriotic movement. We go out of our way to arrange to give an entertainment relying on the fact that other ixiople have given entertainments in the Town Hall uuder pretty well the same condition, and havo got it free. '1 hen for some reason, wo are promptly met with this statement that wo must not pay for services. They must realise that there would be some charges. All they could expect tho association to do was to keep those charges as low as possible. We want to do our part in connection with this patriotic movement. On another occasion when I made some inquiries, I was told they would charge rent for the Town Hall, and donate the rent to some other Patriotic Fund." He held that they were not out to make money for some other people's fund. After further discussion it was decided to go on with the contest on Juno 1(). "If we havo to pay tho rent we will pay it," said Mr. M'Villy, and a resolution to that effect was carried.

Officials for the meeting were then appointed as follow:—Referee, Mr. Sampson; time-keepers, Messrs. Laurensen and Ludwig; official seconds, Messrs. Cook and Hoggard; stage manager, Mr. Day; announcer, Mr. E. Blundell. Prices: Stage, os.; ringside and side-gallery, 35.; gallery and back. 2s. Military, 3s. seats for 2s.
