"T. G. MACARTHY" CONVALESCENT HOME
—4 1 AT BELMONT. Some time ago the T. (•}. Macarthy Trustees notified the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board that they were prepared to provide £2000 a year for three years for the purpose of providing _ a children'-s convalescent home in Wellington. Such a generous offer was one which could not be ncglected, and recently a property on the hills above the Belmont Road (just beyond Mellings) was, after inspection, purchased from Mr. F. J. Pinny for £4000. This property occupies a fine, sunny position, commanding a splendid view of the valley and harbour from an eminence, and is surrounded by between IS and 19 acres of practically flat land, capable of being made into a very beautiful estate. There is also an eightroomed residence on the property which is to be altered to meet tho requirements of a twenty-bed convalescent home.
The donation from the Trustees was conditional on the place being called the "T. G. Macarthv Children's Convalescent Home," which will, of course, be complied with, and that the property selected met with the approval of the medical superintendent. It was inspected and approved of by Dr. Hardwick Smith (the late medical superintendent) and Dr. Barclay (the present officer) and as the plans have to meet with the approval of the Inspector-Gen-eral of Hospitals, Dr. Valintine is to visit the property to-day.
Mr. H. Baldwin (chairman of the board) states that he wishes all the beds in the now homo to be endowed, and already he has been promised three, one of which is to be provided by the ■ young ladies of the Lower Hntt. It _ costs £8 10s. to provide and equip a bed. Those who would care to be associated with such a deserving object in a practical wav could not do better than communicate with Mr. Baldwin either at his office in Old Customhouse Quay, or at the Borough Office at the Hntt.
