WELLINGTON MUSICAL UNION

9 ANNUAL MEETING. Mr. Geo. Shirtclilfo (president) occupied the chair at the annual meeting of the Wellington Musical Union held last oyening in St. Andrew's Schoolroom. There were about sixty members present. Tho annual report stated that tho last annual meeting had been held on March 11, 1912, when Mr. Robert Parker had found it nccessary to decline re-election as conductor. As a mark of appreciation and respect it was resolved to tender him a complimentary concert. As the result members were gratified on being able to. present him with a purse containing £150. Owing to the union being without a conductor it was resolved at a meeting held on April 1, 1912, that it should go into recess until such time as a suitable conductor be chosen. On Alonday, Slay 6, 1913, Mr. Carl Sauer was appointed conductor until tho end of the year, when his engagement was terminated. The only work performed under his baton was Rossini's "William Tell." The result of the performance was disastrous to tho union, the cost of soloists alone being £111, quite apart from the cost of hall, orchestra, advertising, etc. The union made a loss on that performance and a- concert given by the soloists of approximately £130. On August 10, 1914, Mr. Herbert Claughton was elected conductor, but-owing to the conflictin Europe it was decided to remain in recess until such time as the committee deemed it advisable to resume.

'.Die balance-sheet read by the hon. treasurer (Mr. W. It. Bock) showed receipts from December 31, 1911 (when there was a credit of 14s. lid. in hand), £626 18s. lid., which included a bank overdraft of £99 3s. 6d. On the expenditure sido there were the following payments:—To Mr. Robert Parker, £150; to Herr Carl Sauer, £50_3s. lOd.; rent of Town Hall and practice room, £75 16s. 8d ; ; soloists, £111; printing and advertising, £69 12s. 2d. Since the balance-sheet had been drawn up the overdraft had been reduced to £87 10s., but there were accounts owing amounting to £8 10s., which made the deficit, £95. Against that was the union's library of music, which was valued at £250. As to the realisable value of that asset, the chairman said he was hardly prepared to express an opinion.

In moving the adoption of the report and balancc-sheet, the chairman said that ho thought members would recogniso that the circumstances under which they had been labouring since they ha<l been unfortunate enough to lose Air. Parker as conductor, had made it impossible to carry on and escape making n loss on concerts. Under the circumstances they could congratulate themselves that tho loss was not greater than it had been. He emphasised tho credit given in the annual report to Air. F. V. Waters for the good work ho had done for the union, and they had all felt sorry when ho felt that he must discontinue his membership. Their liabilities were under £100, and when they had done him the honour to elect him president on a previous occasion the position had been the same, but with the active co-operation of the members tho.v had cleared off the debt, and they would do it again.

The motion to adopt the report was seconded by Air. Hodgson, and carried. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patrons, His Excellency tho Governor, tho lit. Hon. the Prime Alinister, and Sir Joseph Ward; president, Air.- Geo. Shirtclilfo; vice-presidents, Archbshop Redwood, Bishop »Sprott, Sir ltobt. Stout, Air. Justice Cooper, tlie Mayor (Air. J. P.
