SATURDAY'S FIELD SPORTS
RUGBY CONTESTS
ATHLETIC BEAT TRENTHAM
SOME HEAVY SCORING
SUMMARY OF RESULTS. Athletic 8 Trentham A ... 3 Oriental 23 Wellington 8 Poneke 41 University 6 Trentham C ... 31 Selwyn 5 Petone 15 Trentham B ... 3 The long-looked-for meeting of the two leading teams in the competition— Athletio and Trontham A—drew the biggest crowd of this season to the Athletic Park on Saturday. But as everybody knows, Saturday was a day of days in other respects, and it is quite likely that the people did not all go to the park with the sole object of seeing football games. Those wlio had built up hopes about good Rugby must have been rather disappointed. In a strenuous but not over well ordered game Athletic beat the soldiers, and Oriental scored an easy win over Wellington. There was a merry interlude while two teams of ladies had a ten-minute game, for which Mrs. F. .Roberts acted as referee. Not all of the girls knew every rule in the game, and but for the colours it might have been difficult to judge always for what side the players meant to fight. They did not fight strenuously at all, but they provided no end of amusement for the crowd and for themselves. Subsequently the whistle used by Mrs. Roberts was sold at auction for the Wounded Soldiers' Fund, and a sum of £10 was so realised. ATHLETIC STILL UNBEATEN. It was in the back division that Athletic had the advantage over Trentham A. The soldiers heartened all their supporters by scoring first—a penalty goal by E. Roberts. Athletic set out to wipe off the deficit, and' presently S. Wilson made a long break, passing near the line to Church, to Madden, and the last-named scored. Wilson kicked a goal—Athletic, 5; Trentham A3. The boys from the camp opened the second spell with a-brilliant rush, which the Blue and Blacks had to try their best to stop. Safe tackling and good kicking cleared the line at length,, however, and then Athletic set up a fierce attack and maintained the pressure for some minutes. In that while the Trentham boys had several narrow escapes, and in the end M'Carlie scored the easiest of tries. Wilson missed a simple shot at goal. For the rest of the game Athletic were mostly on the offensive, and if Roberts had not done heroic defensive work the soldiers' beating would have been a much bigger one. Mr. C. Fraser was referee. ORIENTAL BEAT WELLINGTON. The game between these two teams was well below senior standard. Wellington held up well for half the game, both sides having scored 8 .points each: at half-time. Thereafter Oriental won all the way, finishing with the scores 23—8 in their favour. Burrell and Goodbehere scored tries for Wellington, and Beard converted Burrell's try. The Oriental score included five tries scored by Moffitt, Hiokson, Shearer, Parker, and M'Pherson. The other points came from a potted goal by Capper, and the conversion of two tries, by Cowie and' Avery. Mr. E. Le Cren was referee. PETONE AND TRENTHAM B. At Trentham the senior game between Petone and Trentham B resulted in rather an easy win for the former team. The greasy state of the ground resulted in the game being not as fast as would otherwise have been the case. Petone scored 'early in the first spell—a passing rush ending in Bolton crossing the soldiers' lino. No goal resulted. Towards the end of the spell Hagan scored a second try for Petone, but again the kick was unsuccessful. The only points earned by Trentham in the first spell were the result of a penalty goal, kicked by Vf. Anderson, the scores at half-time being: Petone, 6; Trentham B, 3. On resuming, Petone soon held the upper hand, and tries were added at intervals by Davis, Dent, and Joseph Ryan, but not a single goal resulted. Trentham B were unable to obtain any score in this spell, and the match ended :—Petone, 13; Trentham B, 3. Mr. W. J. Meredith was the referee. PONEKE—UNIVERSITY. Poneke literally galloped pver the 'Varsity men on the Hutt Recreation Ground, defeating them by 41 to 6. The men of the striped jerseys attacked with vim right through. Tilyard (Poneke) played a masterful game, setting his in "' action time and again. His kicking, too, was a ture of the game, five goals and one try being his contribution. The University men scored twice. Beard and O'Sullivan being responsible respectively. Poneke's scoring procession went bv in this order: Morris, Tilyard, Morris, Algar, Prenderville (King converted), Morris (2), Brewer, Hedges, "Algar converting one. Poneke must certainly be congratulated on their goalkicking, and it will come as a pleasant surprise to the Rugby followers, who have witnessed the exhibitions of the last few years. Mr. A. M. Hunt was the referee. IN OTHER CENTRES. •H * . Itcfp Association.) Auckland, May 29. Senior Rugby.—College Rifles (6) v. City (0); 'Varsity (13) v. Parnell (0); Marists (8) v. Ponsonby (3).
