CONFLICT STILL RAGING

IMPORTANT POSITION CARRIED BY THE RUSSIANS SEA FIGHT IN THE ADRIATIC AUSTRIAN CRUISER DAMAGED MORE STEAMERS SUNK BY PIRATES 0 IRRITATION IN AMERICA VIOLENT SPEECH BY GERMAN CHANCELLOR 'A H6TT interest attaches to the Austro-Italian campaign by the report of a naval engagement in the Adriatic between Italian and Austrian cruisers and destroyers, the result being on the whole in favour of the Italians, who lost a destroyer, while the enemy lost a submarine, in addition to which one of their cruisers was badly damaged. The high morale of the Italian Navy is shown in the gallantry of the officers and crew of the destroyer Tribune, which fought for an hour with a fire raging in her vitals, the commander finally sinking her to avoid being compelled to hand over his ship to the enemy. In the land operations, the Italians have occupied Gradisco,' a few miles inland from the Gulf of Trieste, and elsewhero have made good progress. A story of splendid heroism is revealed in the exploits of an Italian lieutenant and his men against- heavy odds. Herr von Bet-h----xnann-Hollweg, the German Imperial Chancellor, has delivered a violent tirade in the Reichstag against Italy—and, incidentally," against practically everybody else —and has declared it to be the unalterable intention-of tJieAustro-German Alliance to prosecute the war to the uttermost. The war in the Western theatre is at present to the advantage of the Allies, who are making steady progress on the various fronts. In the Eastern theatre the great battle of the San River continues with intense fury, wij;h varying fortunes, but in the main ' in favour of the Russians, who have carried an important position by assault, making large oaptures. There is practically no news of fresh developments in the Dardanelles. A Turkish warning to neutrals that - the war is to be carried into the Suez Canal zone is interpreted to mean an excursion by a submarine, or submarines, into this great international thoroughfare.
