POULTRY INDUSTRY

(By Chantecler.).

Stamping Eggs. At the recent conference it was decided to ask the Government to enforce the stamping of foreign eggs. It is claimed these eggs aro sold as fresh eggs and, from what wo have seen of thorn they are certainly of good quality. If the poultrymen would devoto their energy to enforcing; merchants to stamp tho thousands of preserved eggs now being sold as fresh there would be more justice in tho claim. • We agree foreign eggs should bo stamped, mot so much for inferior quality, as to let tho public know they are supporting foreign goods. Still, if it would mean the creation of a better impression than the preserved eggs now being sold as preserved, it would be better not to advertise the Ameriacn stock at all. Recently an offer of 5000 dozen American eggs was made at Is. 7d., but the offer was turned down in favour of our own goods, though the profit of handling the line would have been three timea as much. If poultrymen will cease pabbing for 2s. Gel. a dozen in the winter we can soon dishearten the American trade. Prorision should be made to supply the demand with our cold storagp eggs in winter, and keep the price dowa in winter, and up more in summer. The Patriotic Funds. Poultrymen are doing their little bit towards the funds, though the high price of feed is striking them hard. At J. B. Merrett and Co.'s Poultry Market, Christchurch, a collection has been taken up each Saturday, and no less than JEIOS has been raised for the Belgian funds. This reflects great credit on tho ponltryjnen. To help the furnishing of the Hospital Ship Mr. Marrett has given -SSO towards the supplying of feather pillows, of which 1200 are required. Other poultrymen could supply a number of these if their heart "lies right , there." . A Suggestion. Some of our wonnded soldiers will be back among us, and those poultrymen who find it hard to give cash can give soma fresh eggs. Our boys will appreciate the gift. N.Z.
