Thero wis another "ladies' evening" at the Frenoh Club on Thursday night. Madame de Cleene gave a very interestpaper dealing with three important periods of French literature. Each period was illustrated by a reading from a drama by a representative author, in which she was ably assisted by Mdlle. de Cleene. Tho lecturer dealt fi"? with tho classical period, and il- ,; •-!> ated by readings from Racino'a V sd drama, "Athalie." ' Next sho 1 .wed how tho literature of tho roaancist period differed from that of the ■iriod. The illustration was taken from
' ■ ctor Hugo's "Ituy Bias." Finally e treated, thought at less length, _>o modern period, and gave an amusing reading from a modern comedy. The wholo of the lecture, but especially the readings, Were listened to with groat attention by the audience. There was a short discussion in which Mdlle. du Bosson and Messrs. Lattey, Lajoino, and Cooke took part, and a very hearty vote of thanks was passed to Madame and Mdlle. de Cleene. The programme for the session was announced, and the evening's proceedings closed with tho "Marseillaise."
In one recent month there were issued to the troops of the British expeditionary Force 10,0001b. of dubbing for boots, 30,000 bars of soap, 150,000 pairs of seeks, and 100,000 pairs of boots. In addition, there wore 450 miles of telephone wire and 570 telephones.
