SOCIAL & PEKSONAL ' Wedding In St. Paul's. Tho wedding took place on May 19 at St. Paul's Pro-Oathedral, by tho llev. A. M. Johnson, M.A., assisted by tho llov. G. B. Stoveuson, M.Sc., of Mr. Cyril Steed Girdlestone, youngost- son of Mrs. Girdlestone, of Muritai, to Miss Linda Oharlotto Stacc, fourth daughter of Mr. T. W. Stace, of "Tirirat;i,'' Thorndon. Tho bride, who was given away by her father, wore a gown of ivory cashmero-de-soio, with draperies of silver ombroidory, and court train of silk ninon and silver embroidery, hnod with 6hcll pink ninon and finished with bunches of satin roses. She wore a pearl necklace, the gift of tho bridegroom, and carried a shower bouquet of chrysanthemums and freesias. The bridesmaids were: Miss Olive Stooo (sistor of the brido), Miss Olive Bowlands (cousin), and tho Misses Julia and Helon Dunn. Tho first two bridesmaids wore frooks of shell pink satin, veiled with ninon, and hats of mole velvet with iarge pink roses. Thoy carried lloral mulfs to match their frocks, and wore, respectively a wristlet watch and torquoiso and pearl wreath broooh—the gifts of the bridegroom. The two tiny bridesmaids were in frocks of heliotrope satin, with mob caps to match. They carried lloral baskets and woro the bridegroom's gifts, a banglo each. Mr. Hugh Girdlestone was best man, and Mr. Wilfrod Barton was groomsman. After tho ceremony about 60 guests were entortained at the residence of \ tho bride's father, where the wedding I breakfast was sot in tho billiard-room. Tho pink shaded gasoliers and candles on the table and walls (the room being darkonod) gave a most charming effeot with the decorations of pink ana white chrysanthemums and autumn leaves. After the usual toasts the bride and bridegroom left by motor for the north amid showers of congratulations. The bride's travelling costume was' winecoloured, with black finishings and mole hat with mole ostrich swathing and wine-coloured roses. Mrs. Girdlestone, the bridegroom's mother, wore a blaok costume, white fox furs, and black hat with white ostrich plume. Protection of .Women. A meeting of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children was held. on. Friday afternoon, Lady Stout presiding. There were also present Mesdames F. M. B. Fisher and G. Winder. A large number of cases which had been investigated were imported tipon, and others were being attended to. Tho following subscriptions were acknowledged with thanks:—Mrs. Barraud, 55.; Mr. G. Allport, 10s.; Mrs. Wright, 2s. 6d. Y.W.C.A. Notes. A demonstration in the art of sweetß waking is to be given at the Young Women's Christian Association, Fowlds' Buildings, to-day. at 3.30 p.m., by Miss Margaret Russell. The demonstration is open to the public. "Every Girl's Opportunity" is the title given to the attraotive syllabus of educational' classes, clubs, and circles, which the Y.W.C.A. is placing at the disposal of every young woman-in Wellington. Tho need has arisen for girls to fit themselves for any emergency and the Y.W.C.A. seeks- to enable all girls to prove themselves capable of rising to the occasion. A hearty welcome will be given at the Young Women's Christian Assooiv tion to-night to anyone joining the party of busy workers who will be engaged in sewing for the new hostel in Brougham Street. Already a transformation lias taken place in the building, in preparation for the girls. A number have already engaged rooms, and others intending to find a home there are advised to give in their names at the Y.W.C.A., Herbert Street, at once. the New Walk. It would be ridiculous to take the short, semi-Japanese steps necesß&ry with the hobble-skirt when wearing the widened jupe. To appear graceful in the wide skirts a medium Btride, with just a suggestion of springiness, is essential. But care must be taken not to jerk or the skirt- will not hang well, neither must there be any hint of dancing in the new movement. Also, the arms must on no account be allowed to swing. The correct movement with the new order of things, it seems, requires patience and practice. An Australian girl reoently returned from Europe says that English-women are diligently practising the new walk, which acts as a sort of relaxation after their strenuous patriotic work. Naturally the mincing gait of the sheath skirt period would be inappropriate with the skirt three and a half yards in circumference. 1

An interesting talk upon three of tht world s great musicians, Liszt, Wagner, and Chopin, was given'by Dr. von Danneville at the Pioneer Club last evening. With Liszt the speaker had been brought into particularly close contact, having been, as she told her audience, rns demonstrator, and naturally her audienoe looked for the personal, intimate touches which in such a case would be at her command. The lecture was one that had been given at the club on a previous occasion, and practically the same ground was covered, only this time Dr. von Danneville played some of the compositions of the masters of whom she had been speaking. 1 There was a very good gathering of and the lecture was listened to with interest. The Town Hall, in which it was given, was crowded, and the scenes from "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass" were excellently performed. Those taking part were practically all members of tho Girls' Branch of the League, who gavo the performance in Wellington some few months ago. Songs and recitations were also given, the performers being tho Rev. Mr. Harvey, Master Rodney Pankhurst, and Miss Phoebe Parsons. Sweets and flowers were also sold for the benefit of tho fund, and their receipts were no inconsiderable addition to the sum which resulted from the evening's effort..
