NEEDS OP SICK AND WOtfNDED
Sydney, May 28. Aa influential committee has been appointed to carry out a/Red Cross scheme to meet the needs of the sick and wounded. Mr. Hugh J.-Ward is organising a public appeal,' and is aiming at raising v £200,000. Mr. Holman,' referring to an announcement that an endeavour would be made to raise lied Cross funds in America, said there was no need for that. Australia could not afford to have it said that she was not prepared to buy comforts for her own soldiers. The charity of our own people was unlimited,. The Government 'had already undertaken to inaugurate a combined movement throughout Australia for the sick and wounded, and he was negotiating with the Premiers of the ether States in the' matter. HOTEL HOURS. CURTAILMENT .SUGGESTED. Melbourne, May 28. In the Assembly, during the discussion on the Temporary Restriction Bill, the Premier (Sir A. Peaoock) said that it seemed to be the general agreement that some curtailment of hotel hours was required. If they were curtailed, the,people should not bo able to get drink elsewhore when the hotels were closed. The Government would therefore submit an amendment prohibiting anyone except the occupier, the family, or servants, drinking on unlicensed premises between 9.30 o'clock at night and 9 o'clock in the morning. CENTENARY OF SIR H. PARKES. i Sydney, May 28. To mark the centenary of the late Sir Henry Parkes's birth, the Premier (Mr. Hojman) presented the Art Gallerv with a bust of the deceased statesman.
