5 AS PATRIOTIC ENTERTAINMENT. t Some divergent views were expressed ) at the City Council last night on a re- , commendation by the .Finance Commiti tee that the application of the AVelliiigj ton Boxing Association for the free -use of tlio Town Hall on June 10 should bo granted on the condition that 110 payment was made for services rendered. The proposed boxing meeting is for patriotic purposes, and Councillor Fuller objected to the condition made that no payment should be made for services rendered. This was put in, he said, to a prevent professional boxing. Ho moved ) as an amendment tlipjt the condition . should be struck out. a Councillor _ Luckie also strongly sup- - ported the idea that professional box- . ing should bo allowed. It would mean i a largo increase of public interest in the meeting. .. Councillor Fitzgerald thought the ind elusion of the latter words was a II clever attempt to defeat the first portion of the recommendation. Every .. member of the Finance Committee knew . it was a matter of impossibility to get "two good men to go into the ring and 0 punch each other for nothing." The 0 members of the Boxing Association were e prominent men. and would only proe mote good clean sport. They wanted everyone there, and he hoped to see the Mayor present. The Mayor: I was there before. Councillor Fitzgerald: And didn't you enjoy yourself? (Laughter.) Councillor Hutcheson: I have as little regard for professional boxing , 3 men as anyone, but I think that it is inconsistent to let the hall free of charge unless you are going to let them e have it in the way they believe will provide the greatest return. He supportn cd tho amendment of Councillor Fuller. Councillor Atkinson thought that by ' fi permitting this privilege they would be ' r giving a privilege to boxing which they 3 refused to other professions. Tliev did not want patriotism used as a cloak for professionalism. 0 Councillor Barber said that evory•t where to-day thf law was being broken if to raise patriotic funds. He actually saw a. £1 note raffled that day. lie y supported tho free use ot' the hull imconditionally. c > The Mayor said that lie had been besieged by applications from profes- '■* sional people for the use (if the hall, [. and if they created a precedent everyone would lie applying. What was the amount? Only CIS, and he thought payment should be made in the onli--0 nary way. lS A division was called on Councillor ]" Fuller's amendment, and the voting was equal. The Mayor (hen gave his ll casting vote against the amendment. Councillor Fuller: 1 am surprised at yon. t, ' Tim KltKiiii-e CeimtuUeti'i fecuwiileit. ,♦ fUt.iw- was carried..
