CRISIS APPROACHING t FURIOUS ATTACKS IN ■ -.'the- west ' SUCCESSFUL ADVANCE OF THE ALLIES ■ ITALIAN TROOPS IN - / • ; AUSTRIA - FEEBLE RESISTANCE FROM THE ENEMY : ' The extreme violence and strategical importance of the great conflict between the Austro-Germans and the Russians on the San River line has momentarily detached the interest from the new theatre of war in. Northern. Italy. Millions are engaged in a deadly struggle for the control of the San line, and report states that the -Kaiser himself is directing the Austro-German assault. - The Russians are, optimisticas to the ultimate issue. In the Western theatre, the Germans, exasperated by their recent checks, have delivered several violent attacks, without result. The French are advancing on Angres, an important position on the German defensive line, while the British advance east of Festuhert- is heing steadily maintained. In 'Northern Italy the advanoe against the Austrian frontier positions is be'ing steadily developed, but there are no picturesque details.' In the Dardanelles another loss has befallen the British fleet, t-lio battleship Triumph being torpedoed and sunk in the ,Gulf of Saros while covering the operations of the colonial troops on the Peninsula. On Gallipoli itself, tho operations of the Allies are being successfully developed, and the Turkish losses have necessitated au incessant stream of reinforcements' from the Caucasus. The German submarine pirates have sunk another American ship—a fleet coal-carrier, be it noted—and interesting developments are indicated.
