MAGISTRATE'S COURT

A LONG LIST BREAKING AND ENTERING Mr. I). G. A. Cooper, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday. A young man, named Hector Jl'Lean, was' charged with the indictable offence that on April lii, 1915, he did break and enter the house of Henry Barrett, 3 Lloyd Street, and steal therefrom lour gold studs, one lady's gold watch, one lady's gold chain, one gold ring, and other articles, to tho value of the property of Henry Barrett. Complainant, a building inspector, gave evidence that on tho night of April 16 hi left the house with his wife at about 7.30 o'clock. When they returned about 11 p.m. . they found the bedroom ransacked, and tho articles mentioned in the charge missing. He identified tho recovered articles as his property. , Benjamin ALetz, pawnbroker's assistant, testified that a ring from the stolen property was pawned with him. He was not able to say that accused pawned it. Evidence was given th;ut accused was arrested at Cliristchurch on another offence. After the ofienco his room at tho I'.JI.C'.A. was searched, and the stolen articles in Court were discovered, also a pawn ticket for the ring. Accused first said that the detective had put them in his room, but afterwards admitted taking them from the house in Wellington. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. BLIND MAN CHARGED. The case was proceeded with agaipst John M'Carthy, a blind man, charging him with having used obscene language in the bar of the Royal Hotel. On two occasions the accused has been before the Court, and asked for a remand to a higher Court. Yesterday ho gave a good deal of trouble in tho Court with irrelevant interjections, and behaved in rather i an extraordinary manner during the con- ■ duct of tho case. On one occasion tho Magistrate had to warm him that lie i would be committed for contempt of : Court if he was not careful. Accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed ■ to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was ' fixed at ,£IOO, or two sureties of .£SO. Ac- ■ cused desired that a warrant should be , issued against one of the witnesses for ; perjury and conspiracy. ! OTHER CASES. 1 Ellen Ready and John Johnson were • fined 205., in default three days' imI prisonment, for drunkenness, and one first offender was dealt with in ithe ordinary way. Margaret M'Hugh was fined ' 6s. for drunkenness, 20s. in default, three ' days' imprisonment for procuring liquor : for a prohibited person, and remanded 1 till June 2 on a charge that she was a [ rogue and a vagabond in that she had 1 insufficient means of support.
