MASTERTON NOTES

Tho Masterton Citizens' Defence Corps has made good headway of iate, 3 u u ' te a commoll thing for over a hundred townsmen to be on parade. Considerable interest is also taken in tho shooting at the butts, where some very creditable scores art being put up. At a patriotic gathering at Ihuraua Valley on Tuesday night a sum of £97 was secured' for a' flag, and the takings for the evening amounted -to nearly £200. Most of the butter and cheese factories in this district will shortly be closing down for the season. Over seventy women are now interested in the classes recently started by the Masterton branch of the St. John' Ambulance Association. A class in history and .economics is about to be established at the Masterton Technical School. In the. shooting for the Farmers'' Union Shield,'the scores put up by the Wairarapa branch.cs of the union were as follow:—Masterton, 562; Greytown, 554; Featherston", 541; Martinborough, •196; Gladstone,' 427. Recruiting is proceeding slowly throughout the Wairarapa, and little difficulty is experienced in providing tho local quota.- ; Tlie death occurred on Monday of Mrs. Mary Louisa Williams, relict of the late Mr. Charles Williams, at the age of 65 years. The deceased was formerly a resident of Blenheim. Over £8000 has been raised in tho Wairarapa to date for the tarious relief funds. This is apart from the Lady Liverpool Fund, the Equipment Fund, and donations in kind. Many residents are making monthly contributions to the Relief Fund. The winter outlook for cattle in the Wairarapa is not bright, as there is a shortage of rough feed.
