MEN JOINING THE COLOURS

1 CITY STILL RESPONDING QUOTA FOR EXTRA FORCE CHOSEN UNWELCOME RECRUIT PRISONER OF WAR ENROLS AND IS REJECTED. Men flocking to tho Colours crowded tlio Wellington Recruiting Office early yesterday afternoon. The morning had been rather quiet, but by three in the afternoon the place was crowded by fine, big, able-bodied men, all far above the Tieight and cliest requirements, all in deadly earnest, and all keen as possible to get away. Anyone arriving at this stage of the day's proceedings would have felt sure that a record in recruiting was about to be established'. It was a good day, but not a record. The afternoon rush was duo to the fact that many of tho men who came forward took advantage of their weekly half-holiday to enrol, i he total of enrolments for the day was fifty, which brings the city's total since August up to 3823. Now-a-days it is interesting to observe tho proportion of married men enlisting. Yesterday nearly one-fifth of the volunteers were married; forty-ono were single and nine married. One married man stated a preference tor hospital work, and tho others asked to be attached to some one of the militant branches of the service. Married men are not allowed t-o proceed to camp, or if in camp may not go to the front, unless they have the consent of their wives. In the cases of a majority of the married men who enrol, there is no difficulty about the obtaining of this consent, but some wives raise objections, and the men concerned are then promptly informed of the fact, and told that they have been struck off. One of the married men who filled in his card yesterday is just inside the age-limit; he is 39. Among those who enrolled yesterday were two Maoris, both of whom wish to go' away with tho Maori Reinforcement draft which is now being secured. One of these is Mr. Pani Paora-Cliam-berlain, of Khandallah. Among the names, of the recruits published in Monday's Dominion there appeared the namo of a German, fairly well known in 'Wellington, who was for a while interned on Somes Island. Several men complained to this office of the fact that a prisoner of war, who was on parole, should be allowed to enlist, and stated that they did not feel at all disposed to go forward in any force whioh might include him. Ho\vpver, this nnpleasant position will* not arise, for the man has been scored off the list, and will not be allowed to join tho forces. .A s *l le P r °gress of recruiting outside Wellington, tho final medical examination of Christchurch men for the Extra forco was held on Tuesday evening, and it is understood that tho Canterbury quota is now practicallv ready to be sent forward. Bv the end of this week they may be in Trent-ham Camp. The position in Ota go was that on Monday 404 infantry for the Extra Force had been enrolled, and it was considered that the members would be inoreased to 450 by Wednesday. The infantry quota Ota go was asked to supply was 547. These 547 men should have been secured and "notified" before now, as the date of leaving Dmiodin for Trentham had been fixed for Saturday next. Auckland, Canterbury, and Ofcago have yet to secure the number of meu required of them for the Seventh Reinforcements, which are to go into camp on Juno 11. ■ Wellington's quota for tho Seventh has been full for some time, and the City oflic? has also practically enough men on its books to make good its shaie of tly> Eighth Reinforcements. The Wellington City quota of the Extra Force has been called up, and notified to proceed to camp on Saturday next. It is doubtful, however, if the camp will be prepared to receive the men on that date, for up till quite recently the cooking arrangements had not been quite completed. However, : tho orders say Saturday next, and tho men will parado at Garrison Hall at 9 a.m. for tlie purpose of being dispatched to the training-ground. The Wellington men called up include 15 who are included to make good shortages in tho Otago ranks. Also, in , view of the fact that some of those call- , ed up mav fail to reach the Garrison . Hall by the stipulated time, an extra , twenty have been notified to hold them- , selves in readiness to proceed to camp. , Tins is not a notification to go into ; camp, but merely an intimation that if t a vacancy occurs there is a chance for one of tho twenty. The men who enrolled yestorday were:— Leslie Bernard Boyd, clerk, city. Reginald B>. iiorisblow, reporter city. ' Ernest Burr, grocer, Hataitai. James M'Hardie, storcman, city.
