THE BANG SYSTEM
The Bang system for obtaining a herd free from tuberculosis vas originated by Dr. Bang, of Denmark. It was discovered that calves bora from tubercular animals were healthy and- byseparating thorn from their dams and feeding them on pasteurised milk, or milk known to be froa from tubercular germs, healthy animals -;ould be raised. It is not uncommon to find some of tho best bred animals striken with tuberculosis. Breeders do not like to lose tho blood of such cows. It may bo said further'that when the tuberculin test is applied to a herd and 50 per cent, or more of them react, it is bettor to treat tho entire herd as having tuberculosis and separate tho calves from tlieir mothers as soon as born and feed them pasteurised milk. Caro should bo taken to keep these calves entirely separate from their mothers.
This system involves more or less exponso and trouble because different quarters must bo provided, also different pastures and a separate yard. The system will be defeated if the young animals are allowed to come in contact in any way with the herd suffering from tuberculosis or occupy the same stables or yards. With tbe proper precaution of separation and carfi taken to prevent any of tho milk coming from th© herd to be fed, until pasteurised, healthy animals can be rais-
ed. . . In short, the Bang system of raisuig calves or freezing tbe herd from tuberculosis means tho separation of tno calves from their dams as soon as born, footling them on milk free from tubercular germs, and preventing them from coming in contact with animals suffering from tuberculosis. Where this system is carried out proper' at every step, it is possible to retain the good blood .of the herd and raise cue that is free from tuberculosis.
