THE CITIZEN'S DUTY.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —It has become the fashion in these times of war for everyone to tell everyone else that he should be off to the war. This advice is given quite gratuitously by all who think that for some /eason or other they are unable to go themselves. But if the war affects them so 6trongly that they feel constrained to teach others their duty it is to be hoped that they are themselves carrying out their own dufcy perfectly. If a man enlists he offers the most he can give for his country, his life. _ Are those who are so ready with their advice and censure giving the most they can give ? Surely if the man who does go is willing to give his life those who stay should bo equally willing to give every penny they possess over and above enough to live on to help their country. Are they all doing this? If they are not prepared to do so, let them hold their peace. Let him who is perfect cast the first stone. Tho young men of New Zealand have answered the call of the Empire nobly. Can we say the sarno of those who stay at homo? Are they doing all they can? The man who makes the finest soldier is ho who hears the call himself, and no ciie is needed to tell him when this comes. If less advice were given the recruiting would probably proceed quite as briskly.—l am, etc., LIBRIPENS.
