THE KING'S-BIRTHDAY

AND THE SATURDAY HALF-HOLI-DAY. Thursday of nest week, June 3, is the King's Birthday, and as Saturday of next week is the first occasion on which the Wellington shops (with the exception of those exempt under tho Act) have to close owing to the result of the poll in April, there aro some • shopkeepers in a quandary as to which day they should observe as tho holiday or halfholiday, as the caso may be. The officials of the Labour Department were consulted on the point yesterday, and in reply stated that it was a perfectly open matter for the shopkeepers. The Shops and Offices Act sets out that those shops which observe a general holiday during tho week may keep open on Saturday, and those who open on the holiday must observe the half-day on the Saturday. As Empire Day and the King's Birthday have been synchronised this year, and the day has been set apart for the opening of the Queen Carnival in Wellington, it is assumed that the holiday will be observed very closely, and consequently the general Saturday half-holiday will be postponed for a week.
