FIGHTING IN MESOPOTAMIA

THE BRITISH CAMPAIGN London, May 24. The Press Bureau states: The utter failure and rout of' the Turks had a marked effect on the other two columns at Tigris and Karun. A rapid rise in the Kharkhah River and severe sandstorms delayed the British force advancing to check the Turks and secure tho oil pipe-line, and the Turks succeeded ,in retiring to Amarah, thus evacuating Persian territory in Arabistan. The subsequent British operations were therefore confined to the punishment of tho tribes assisting the Turks. Their sligjit resistance was easily overcome. It is officially, announced that tho Arab tribes w!kt were assisting the abortive Turkish raids on the Euphrates have been punished, the British trodps "destroying their strongholds and killing a number.—"Times" and Sydney "Sun" services.
