NOTES AND COMMENTS

[By Glencoe.] Acceptances for the Otaki Meeting close on 'Thursday night at 8.30 o'clock. Nominations for the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Winter Meeting cloeo on Friday next. On' Friday acceptances for the handicap events at the A.R.C. Winter Meeting close at 9 p.m. Final payments for the Great Northern Hurdles are due at the same time. A Hastings trainer fancied Banksia at Wanganui, but as the chestnut mare wag under oiler to' an Auckland sportsman no business could he done. A Dunedin writer who was present at the North Otago Meeting mentions that Magdala's withdrawal from the principal race on the second day's card was due to the discovery of an informality in his nomination. It appears that a complaint was lodged concerning the riding of the horse in the Oamaru Cup, and it was then discovered that, whilst the horse ran in the name of Mr. J. R. B. Beck, lie was really owned by that gentleman's father. Tnis may mean that Magdala's nominations for the D.J.C. Winter Meeting will become void, and, furthermore, that the stakes attached to the Ashburton Cup and placemoney gained at Riccarton will have to be refunded. Possibly the matter may go even further afield. Evidently, say 6 an exchange, the last has not been heard of the Multiply case, which arose out of the Gisborno R.C.'s Summer Meeting. On the second day of that fixture, Multiply won the Racing Club Handicap, but was distanced by the stewards on the ground of interference with Dispatch Carrier, who was awarded the race, Lady Alicia being , placed second, and the dividends were paid out in accordance with these placings. An appeal to the Hawke's Bay District Committee; and subsequently to the Racing Conference, resulted in the Gisborue Club's decision being reversed, and the race was awarded to Multiply. Now it is stated that a number of backers who had tickets on Multiply have instructed a solicitor .to take action, with a view to securing their dividends. The Wanganui studmnster, Mr. Geo. Currie, has now twenty-two mares on his farm, seventeen of which a-re in foal. The recently-imported mare Eulogy has foaled a filly to Conander. Mr. Currie's imported stallion Absurd has his list full for the coming season. It is stated that the Gisborne Racing Club intends giving the profits of the first day of its coming Steeplechase Meeting to the Belgian Fund. Granville, winner of the Stakes at the Rosehill Meeting on Saturday, was bred in Auckland, and is a four-year-old gelding by Spalpeen from Epinde, by Medallion—Epine. by Sweet William. He finished second in a race at Moorefield this month, but Saturday's race marked his first success. Bonny Rigg and The Pole, in charge of R. O'Donnell, were shipped home on Monday night. George is not to fulfil "his engagements at Ellerslie, but will accompany the other Porirua horses to the Otaki Meeting. There is no racing in the Dominion this week. A somewhat unusual happening, it must be admitted. The well-known New Zealand horse Di Gama has resumed work again after a spell of several weeks. He has returned to the Caulfield (Vic.) tracks. The Danube fillies from Tetra'zzini and Perle d'Or, named Worth and Adour respectively, who joined R. J. Mason's team recently, have been ridden and noiy come on the tracks regularly in the afternoon. The Charlemagne ll—Tikitere three-year-old gelding at present working at Riccarton is coming on in quite the rklit way. This was the foal born when his dam was in slings suffering from a broken pelvis, The unusual circumstances connected with his birth do not seem to be reflected in any way in his conformation. 'lhere is likely to be a big weeding-out when tho final payments are made for the Great Northern Steeplechase to bo decided on June 5. The following are expected to be missing:—Bercola. Dorando, Addnonght, Sandy Paul, Bollin, Appin, Leapuki, Waterworks, Sportsman, El Gallo, and probably one or two others of the light-weights. Davlight Bill and Snowraker, in charge of their (rainer, F. Smith, were sent home to Riccarton after the Wanganui Meeting, but tho pair will probably return north for the Hastings Meeting next month. Likely defections from the Great Northern Hurdles on Friday night are Stvrax, Birkful, Cornelian, Commotion, W'aipunoa, and Vascular. An English journal states that Captain Greer will continue to act as Senior Steward of the Jockey Club, the other Stewards being Viscount Villiers and Sir John Thursby, Bart., the latter haviii" accepted office. In the ordinary course Lord wolve-'ton would have become this year the senior official, but his lordship ib engaged just now oil military service. FIXTURES. 1 June 3 and 1— Otaki-Jlaori R.C. Winter June 3 and s—Dunedin J.C. Winter June 3, 5 and 7.-A.R.C. Great Northern Steeplechase. Juno IB and 19.—Hawke's Bay J.C. Winter. June 25 and 2G—Napier Park R.C. Winter July 1 and 3—Gisborno R.C.
