UNEMPLOYMENT INCREASING

For the week ended May 22 the Department of Labour reports that 73 men applied for work. Of this number 53 were placed, 5 in Government and 48 m private employment. In addition a large number of inquiries wero made for local labouring, which unfortunately appears to be rather slack. During the week the Department assisted 14 miners to work, in the North Island. There appears to be very little uiiem■l<imeat in the skilled'trades. Men willing to leave the town and capable of doing heavy manual labour are being offered positions on co-operative works in Nelson and Hawera districts. The experience of the Department, like that of local authorities, is that the number of applicants has a tendency to rise with the approach of winter. If the men do not confine their requests to city work something can bo done for them. In Auckland 113 men applied for work and 20 were placed, 11 in Gvernment and 9 ill private employment. The Department has vacancies for 30 men on railway construction works. Major R. Price, reported as killed at the Dardanelles, was one of the most popular and efficient officers of the _ 4th (Otago) Kegimont. Major Price comes of fighting stock, most of his male relatives being connected with some branch of the service. His father, who resides at Wellington, wis captain in tho Royal Marine Light Infantry, and both his grandfather and great-grandfather sorved in the British' _ Navy.
