NATIONAL RESERVE

ISLAND BAY-BEH-HAMPORE SECTION. On Saturday the Island Bay-Berham-pore Company paraded in large numbers and headed by the Wellington South Drum and Fife Band marched to Ohiro Valley to the shooting ground for the purpose of formally opening the rille butts which have been erected for the use of the members of t'his company. The company formed up and was addressed by Colonel Porter and by Major Wells. At tho conclusion of the opening speech Colonel Porter fired the first round and declared tho range duly opened. Major Wells, in his speech, enumerated the various steps in connection ivit'h tho formation of the Island Bay-Berhampore Company and expressly mentioned Colonel Smith the owner, and Mr. M'Cnllough, the manager, of the Terawhiti Estate for their splendid support of the company and t-lio movement in granting the uso of the ground for this purpose. Among other things it was mentioned that Coionel Smith had definitely promised that the ground would bo for the permanent use of t'lie company. Tho Major also spoke of the excellent services which Mr. C. N. Haslam had rendered to the company in the position of instructor. A matter of which tho company is extremely proud is the fact that five of its members have already volunteered for active service at the front. The names of these five will be inscribed on tho company's roll of honour. About 100 members of the Wellington East Company paraded at tile Clyde Qunv sehoolground last Friday evening, under Major Veitoh. After a short drill a meeting was hold to clcct a captain and two lieutenants. Nominations for the former position were received at the previous weekly parade, and the candidates were balloted for during the week, i'ho meeting confirmed tho election of Mr. R. Kupli as captain and unanimously appointor! Messrs. \Y. H. .Tones and S. Ti. Partridge as first and second lieutenants respectively. A large squad of members is undergoing a thorough training weekly, from which the various nrn-eommissioned officers will be selected. Arrangements are bn'ng made for the rompany to fire in a ride match against a team fiom the Gear Company shortly, and as B Company contains a number of members who have a record for excellent Mwntinc in tpast, an intercut* match ib anticipated
