A NATIONAL FUND
FOR THE WOUNDED OTAGO AGAINST CENTRALISATION It is not known yet whether the conference culled by the Mayor (Sir. J. P. Luke) will be representative enough to come to any definite conclusions as to the establishment of a National Fund for the relief of wounded soldiers, sailors, and their dependents. Canterbury has written urging provincial independence, and Otago, through the Mayor of Duncdin, appears to bo unfavourable to the National Fund proposal, which is generally favoured in Wellington. Tho following is Otago's reply to the telegram forwarded by Mr. Luke to tho Mayor of Duncdin, suggesting a conference to discuss the National Fund proposal :— "Proposed National Fund. Otago has complete organisation to deal will) soldiers and dependents. Hatter will be considered by association, but am strongly of opinion that there will bo strong opposition to any proposal to centralise such n fund. Wo are all looking with confidence to Government so amending the Oefence Act as to provide adequate pensions leaving local generosity lo sii]>ploinont the statutory provision.— (Sgd.) J. J. Clark, Mayor." TWO CHEQUES OF £500 EACH. Yesterday the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) received tho cheques of Messrs. Eric L. Riddiford and B. 11. S. Riddiford for £500 for tho National Fund for the Relief of Wounded Soldiers and Sailors and their Dependents. His Worship expressed his gratitudo at tho generosity of tho Messrs. Tho directors of tho Bank of Now Zealand on Saturday forwarded a cheque for £1000 to tho Mayor for tho National Fund. Blair, of Otaki, promising £50 towards the £400 which I havo asked for as a condition to my giving £100 towards tho Wounded Soldiers Belief Fund. The £400 in question was to bo subscribed by eight settlers in Horowhenua County." GIFTS FROM THE MANAWATU DISTRICT. (By Telccraph.—l'reßß Association.) Palmerston North, May 22.
