CARNIVAL AT HOKITIKA

A HUGE SUCCESS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Hokitika, May 24. There was a record attendanco in Hokitika to-day, when tho election of the Carnival Queen was held. Visitors came from all parts of the West Coast, Greymouth being particularly well represented. The interest, taken, in the ejection was exceptionally keen, and right np to the closing of the poll tho supporters of the various candidates vied with each other in swelling tho fund for the Belgians. The people of the district originally set out to collcct £2000, but tho election realised £5347, in addition to tho amount taken at the gates. The Commercial Travellers' candidate, Miss Gieseking, of Greymouth, received the largest number of votes to win the election, as she has had tho whole-heart-ed support of tho West Coast commercial travellers and Greymouth people. They carried through an extensivo programme of entertainment, and adopted many and varied means of augmenting the fund. The travellers have supjxirted a- candidate in every Carnival Queen election held in New Zealand to swell tho Belgian Fund, and on this occasion they were determined to bo successful, and their win proved to be very popular. The supporters of tho other candidates have been organising for some timo past to win tho election, but their votes were distributed among fivo local aspirants. Tho following is the result: —Miss Gieseking (Greymouth), 209,261, first; Miss Myrtle Keller (Hokitika), 100,187, second; Miss Fanny Evans (Hokitika), 136,406, third; Miss Winchester (Ross), 79,903, fourth; Nurse Isrlale (Kumara), 31,146, fifth; Miss Hatcli (Rimu), 21,838, sixth. When tho result was announced, each candidate returned thanks for tho support accorded her. 'Die successful Queen is to bo crowned to-night in tho theatre.
