The "Daily Chronicle's" Mityleno correspondent states that Colonel Doughty Wyllie. on the staff superintending the landing of the Australians, Eavr from sEipboard the gallant and fruitless charges from the shore trenohes. Numbers of men fell, particularly officers, and Colonel Wyllie asker permission to help. This was reluctantly granted. Going ashore, the Colonel ran in front of the foremost Australians and shouted: "Men, follow I" Inspired by the magnetism of the example, the Australians responded with a cheer. ,They rushed up the .fire-swept, slippery incline, and carried position after position until the enemy was cleared out. Colonel Wyllie was shot dead, but not before he knew that the summit was won. and that the Turks could no longer harass the landing. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND THE CENSOR NEWS THAT WAS HELD UP. Melbourne, May 24. Senator Poarce (Minister for Defence) explains _ that the Government received an official cable message that the troops had left Egypt, but was instructed that the information was secret, and prohibited punblication. The newspapers received a cablegram sating that the movements of the troops had been published in Englanft. The Government cabled the Imperial authorities to obtain release of the news, but did not receive a reply. It again cabled, seeking permission; also for tho King's message congratulating Australia on the successful landing of the troops. The Commonwealth then decided to release the news. Tho blamo, therefore, docs not rest with tho Commonwealth. A MESSAGE PROM BOTHA Melbourne, May 24. General Botha, in reply to Mr. Fisher's message, thanked Australia for her congratulations, and in return complimented the Australian forces on their achievements in the Dardanelles.
