CANTERBURY V. .WELLINGTON. The Canterbury C.C.-Wellington O.C. matoh was resumed on Saturday evening. The results at the various boards are as follow, the Canterbury name being given first in each instance:— Board I.—Severne v. Barnes (Ruy Lopez). This is being played over the board, Mr. Severne being on a visit to Wellington. He won a pawn at the second sitting on Wednesday, and carries that slight advantage to the third sitting, which will probably be held on Wednesday evening. Board II. —Nightingale v. W. E. Mason (Ruy Lopez). The former sought to relieve a difficult position by a sacrifice, which, however, proved unsound, Mason winning shortly beforo midnight. Board lll.—Cumber, vorth v. Still (Ruy Lopez). Unfinished; reserved for adjudication. Board IV.—Lovell-Smith v. W. Mackay (2 Knights' Defence) unfinished, and reserved for adjudication. Board V.—Woodford v. James (Queen's Gambit Declined). The latter won two pawns, but later on inadvisedly allowed the bishop's file to be opened. His defence against the resulting attack was not adequate, and he resigned a hopeless game at move 27. Board Vl.—Gourley v. Kolling (Pliilidor's Defence). .Tho former resigned at midnight, when unable to stem tho onrush of tiro connected passed pawns. Board Vll.—Hawkins v. _ Fouby (Centre Game). The latter wrongly interpreted one of his opponent's moves, thereby losing a game in which ho had the upper hand. This unfortunate clerical error may cost Wellington the match. Board Vlll.—Joyce v. W. F. Barraud (Queen's Pawn game). The early stages saw Barraud in difficulties, but by seizing an opportunity that presented itself lie scored with a pretty mate in three moves, thus adding one more win to his fine match record. Board IX.—A. L. Smith v. S. Gyles (Ruy Lopez). This was the first game finished, Gyles scoring with a mate in six moves—a finish that was greatly admired. BoaTd X.—Black v. Fell (Sicilian Defence). Unfinished; reserveid fo*r adjudication. ' Board Xl.—Shillito v. Hill (Ruy Lopez). Unfinished, and reserved for adjudication. Board XII. —Grant r. Tanner (Giuoco Piano). The latter made an indifferent move against his better judgment., and it proved expensive. Grant attacked strongly with advanced pawns, and sooroa at move 27. To sum up, Wellington has so far notched 4 points to Canterbury's 8. but the latter are expected to at least equalise the scores when the incomplete games are reported on by the Auckland section of the New Zealand Adjudication Board. In any event a close finish may be looked for. Messrs. Clark and Bennett were the operators, and Messrs. Rawnsley, Bock, and Carman filled the places of absent scrutineers.
