(Br Tel6jrapli.--SDCcial Koportor.l Wanoamii, May '-2. The six acceptors all faced the barrier in the Winter Oats. The public i>upportcd Play Off, Hoy, and Veronal ill that order, At the jump-off Gratia u and Veronal were first out, anil led Hoy and Play Off to the straight entrance, where Hoy took charge and ClralUm laded out: of it. Play Oil made an effort here, but could not go on, and tho leaders fought it out, tho ICaramu filly winning b.v a length. King Chiara, who finished last and came from a long way, was third, and Play Off next. The going, which was heavy, ao doubt materially assisted 'he winner, who carried her big weight well and was under pressure for a loug wnv. Client and Salvia wero lwclwd in that order for the Balgownic Hack. Gallupiu and Draft made tho running to Iho bottom bond, where Salvia was prominent. Gailupin was in trouble a quarter of a mile from home, and Draft lod into tho straight from Salvia. Here Client and Vladian put in claims, and a great race to tho post resulted in the favoiiii'iU scoring by a good neck from Salvia, with Vladian a length clear of Draft. The favourite would have been unlucky to get beaton, as Chaminado went back on him when he was moving up at tho ha tmile and ho had to then como round tho field on the turn. As in previous years, tho winner of the Hack Steeples on the opening day triumphed in the Grandstand Steeples. The Pole was a slightly bettor favouirito than Soporific, with Daylight Bill olso well supported. Soporific jumped hiint'elt to the front, at the stand double tho first time, where Daylight Bill and Sportsman came down, but the riders were only shaken. Sop rific then led throughout, and though challenged by The Pole he won with a lot in hand. 1 ho Diver, who was prominenu the whole way, was close up third, with Nita a long way back fourth and Addnought further back. Appin'and Agatha Green were iu tho rear throughout. Tho slow pace s«t by the winner was all in his favour, and his rider, Tricklebank, handled him well. The H?ck Hurdles was a fino race all the way. Awahou, who was a better horse for his race, again scored after a eloso finish with General Webb. .Tolio Fille, tho favourite, was close up, with Doon, who led nearly all the way, just clear of Toreador. Jolio Fille jumped badly throughout, and was in tho rear the whole way, but had it not been for a particularly bad effort \at tho last fence she might have won, as she pu.t in a great run from the three furlongs. '\ ascular began smartly, but he was early iu trouble, as was Birkful. General Webb ran a good race, and was only just beaten. Epworlh fell opposite the stand, but both horse and rider wore unhurt. Black Northern and Corrie monopolised the attentions of backers in the May Hurdles. The latter, who had a great run on tho fence the whole way, won Tery comfortably at the finish from the Auicklandor, who only started galloping when the last hurdle was negotiated. Aratiatia pulled very hard and beat himself, but Immensity ran a good race and was in the fighting line at the last fence. The winner is greatly fancied for the Great Northern Hurdles, and her success to-day does not mean any additional poundage in the Ellerslie event. Play Off, who had raced earliCT in the day, was the only withdrawal from the Empire Handicap. The Greenwood bracket (Emperador and Banksia) wis the elect of backers in a good betting race. At the start George led, but going out of the straight Emperadov rushed to the front, and led down tho back. Across the bottom Lady Louisa and Gold Soult moved up, and the colours of Maniaroa also became conspicuous. Lady Louisa led into the straight from Emperador, but then George came fast on the outside, and in a good finish ho was only a head away when the post was reached. Maniaroa, who was last going out of the stra!g*}it, a length fuvay, and tneii came Emperador. Considering her form on the first day, the winner was allowed to pay a false price. Those who saw him race behind trlenroy at Egrnont considered Fortify the blot of the handicap on the concluding event, and the Hawera horse was made a good favourite, with the top-weight, Calais, next choice. Tho pair finished first and second, but the favourite won by a chain. Calais was first off, but Flying Camp soon headed him,, and was a good four lengths in front at the half-journev. In the run home the favourite easily got the leader, and won very comfortably.
