Conspiouous amongst t'he functions of the National Reserve, and carefully emphasised in the instructions issued by the Defence Department in connection with that organisation, is the encouragement of enlistment iu the reinforcements for the front and the rendering of all possible assistance to the Defence Department in this direction. At a recent meeting of the Wellington District Executive a resolution was unanimously adopted offering to raise at least 2000 men under the Badge of the Reserve, the idea being that each of the four military districts of the _ Dominion—Auckland, Wellington, Christehurdh, and Otago should contribute 500 men towards this total. This resolution was submitted to the Defence Minister, who received the patriotic offer with great pleasure, at tho same time making certain suggestions to the president (Colonel Porter, C.8.) as to the method to be adopted and the direction in which the assistance of the Reserve > could best bo availed of by the Defence authorities. Subsequently a conference was held with the latter when it was found t'hat to accept 2000 as a separate intact forco would conflict with and operate detrimentally against the present system of recruiting. In order, therefore, to effectively assist the Department, the following system of procedure was agreed upon:— 1. Registration cards and conditions are to bo supplied to Headquarters of the Reserve and by them distributed among units or branches to act as enlisting offices by enrolling men from the strength of tho Reserve or from outside. All these cards will be marked "National Reserve," and sent through the National Reserve Office to the Defence Recruiting Office. 1 2. Tho Defence authorities undertake as far as is consistent with reinforcement regulations to keep National Reserve men intact in squadrons, comnanies, or platoons when called upon for active service in the reinforcements. A circular embodying the resolution above referred to, together with other necessary information, has been forwarded by Colonel Porter to all branches of the Reserve throughoutthe Dominion, and it is confidently expected that with their co-operation {Ms patriotic movement on the part of the Wellington District- F.xeeutive will bn practically justified hv tho speedy accession to the strength of the reinforcements of_ 2HOn men wearing the badjee of the National Reserve.
