THE CALL TO ARMS

INFANTRY WANTED WELLINGTON TO BEAR THE BURDEN TRAP FOR SHIRKERS It is almost certain that Wellington will bo called upon to make up infantry shortages for the two Forces soon to go into eamp at Trentham. Wellington has scoured all the infantry it was aslced to find for these forces, but sonio other parts of Now Zealand have been less .successful. If the suggested extra call is made on Wellington, it will provide an opportunity for a number of mon of gotting to the front earlier than they oxpccted to. There were men on tho books hore who did not consider that they had any chance of getting aivay sooner than ivith the Eighth Reinforcements. Yesterday thirty-five men registered at the Wellington office, and this brings the city's total enrolments up t-o 363 G. So far this week 215 have enrolled. Tho tallest man put through Buckle Street Recruiting Office is 6ft. 3in. Ho enrolled this week. Besides being exceptionally tall, he is built in proportion. Only one other man on the books equals him in chest measurement. In about a week from now the Defence authorities will commence handing to the Prfess for publication tho names of all men who, after enrolling, fail to go to the doctor to be examined. ''We want to get at those wasters," says one of the officers concerned in the matter, ''and stop them. They enrol their names aro published in tho newspapers, and when anyone asks them why they are not in camp, tbey say they tried to get in, but were turned down. Tho fact is that they don't want to go, and therefore never attempt to pass the doctor. Wo are going to publish a list of all those who do not go to the doctor within a week of being given their papers to take along to liim. Wo do not refer to the men who have been to the doctor, but have not reported in time when called up, because .they arc • generally men who have gone to the country to work while awaiting their turn to get into camp, and when thus changing their address have failed to notify us, and our notice lias reached them in a, roundabout way, a few days late, so that they have consequently been some days behindhand in coming in. Through being lafe they miss the Force they were allotted to, and have to wait for the nest Force, but they are not shirkers."

Already men aro presenting themselves at tho Wellington Recruiting Office asking for a cltanee to get away with the hospital ship. Wellington City's quota of men for tho ship is thirteen—-seven privates, one cook, and another. It is understood that the Wellington military district's quota, is tweaity-three, and ninety-two is the_New Zealand total., exclusive of the higher officers.
