A SPLENDID OFFER

* TO NATIONAL FUND FOE WOUNDED. Yesterday the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) received the following letter from Mr. A. H. Miles, managing director of Messrs. Murray,-Roberts, and Co.:— "I am authorised by the directors of my company to place at the disposal of tho committee or trustees of the National Fund for the relief of minded tho sum of £1000 when tho fund has been placed upon a workable basis, and provided that the moneys will be confined to the relief of the soldiers, sailors, and others wounded in the war, with their dependents, and the_ dependents of those who lose their lives through the war. .It will no doubt be found that all the funds which may be collected for this objeot will be re-' quired for this purpose alone, and the movement will tto some extent fail in its endeavour if any of the funds are diverted to any other associations, however deserving they may be. The Bum named will be at the disposal of the committee or trustees as soon as tho necessary arrangements are made for the administration of the funds in the direction I have ventured to indicate." Referring to Messrs. Murray, Roberts and Co.'s most generous offer, the Mayor stated that he had already communicated with the Mayors of the other three centres suggesting the formation of a .National Fund for the relief of Wounded soldiers and their dependents, in accordance with tho motion passed a* last Tuesday's publio meeting in tho town Hall. Ho did not think there would be any doubt that such a National Fund as mentioned by Mr. Miles would bo established. In tho meantime the monoy that was being raised was ooing paid into a separato account at the Union Bank and would remain there until the National Fund was established and trustees appointed. If the other centres were not disposed to 00 "?x?°?,''?' t^ L thejl fund would become a Wellington district fund, and trustees would have to_ be appointed to act Kith aim as administrators.
