HEROIC RESISTANCE BY THE RUSSIANS
TERRIFIC . ARTILLERY STORM GERMAN MASSED ATTACK ON THE SAN (Reo. May 21, 8.30 p.m.) Petrograd, May 21. The Russians on the San are maintaining a heroic resistance under a terrible artillery storm. The German advance is a packed, close phalanx of 150,000 men, upon whom the Russian artillery aro inflicting heavy losses. The Germans are sweeping every yard of the- ground with forty batteries, of which half the guns are of largo calibre. The first three days' battle on the Donajecz entailed sixty thousand German casualties and twenty-sis thousand Russian casualties. RUSSIAN OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE. (Reo. "We continue to repulse tenacious attacks on the Drohobycz-Stryj-Dolijia front, inflicting immense losses. "The operations west of Kolomea, on both banks of the Prntli River, continue to our advantage." HUGE AUSTRIAN MORTARS USED AT TARNOW. (Rec. May 22, 0.50 a.m.) ... Paris, May 21. 'According to the "Vossische Zeitung," the Austrian® used a new battery of 52-centimetre mortars at Tarnow. The first shot entirely destroyed a'large tower at a distance of eleven miles.
