WANGANUI WINTER MEETING CONNOLLY HANDICAP WON BY LADY LOUISA. DAYLIGHT BILL AND STYRAX SCORE IN BIG JUMPING. (By Telceraph.—Special CkirriepondenU Wanganui, May 20. The Wanganui Jockey Club's "Winter Meeting opened to-day in glorious weather and before a. record attendance. The totalisator handled .£25,650, as . against .£19,783 on the corresponding day last year. It was a good field that contested the Borough Handicap, and the publio backed Bimeter, Hoy, and Playoff in that order, but within only a few tickets difference at the start. George and Peroneal were badly left, but the others moved oif well. At the half-mile Veroneal and Hoy were justiclear of Bimeter and Grattan. This was the order when, the stand was reached, but here Bimeter took charge, and King Lupin swung round on the outside. Inside the distance a great struggle ensued, Bimeter wearing down. Hoy, and winning by half a length, with Veroneal on the mare's quarters. Playoff, Avon Park, Zeus, and Giattan finished in that order. Bimeter has not won a race since the Elleralie meetiDg at Christmas. Grey Renown Saady Paul, and Soporific carried, the bulk of the support in the Hack Steeplechase. At the first fence Agatha Green, when leading, toppled over, and Katua with Grey Renown took charge. Sandy Paul fell at the back of tne course, and the favourite came into the straight with a. good lead from Soporific, ICatua, and The Diver. ihe 6tand double nearly proved the undoing of the favourite, and he lost a chain. Soporific was well clear at the six furlongs, and, jumping well, he won very easily from The Diver, who was a length in front of Nita. The latter jumped badly. Katua, Stockade, Grey Renown, and-Hpwler finished in that order. Neither M'Sweeney nor M'Flinn was much hurt, but the latter was too much shaken to take the mount on The Pole in the big Steeplechase, and W. Adams was substituted for him. Dorando, Sandy Paul, and Leapuki were withdrawn from tlie big Steeples. In the bird-cage • Jackman appeared to be above himself, but The Pols, Addnought, and Daylight Bill stripped well. Addnought was the machine favourite, with The Pole carrying one more ticket than Daylight Bill. The last-named was pulled in behind at the start, but at the end of half a mile he had jumped himself to the front, and from this out the race was a 'procession. At the 6tand double the last time he over-jumped at the first fence, and was. lucky to find the next, but Scobie widely spelled him, and after that nothing haxl a chance, and his jumping was perfect. Addnought was chasing him most of the, way, but, good stayer as the latter is, he could not get near the grey gelding, who won by fully 100 yards. Over the last half-milo Jackman headed Addnought, and got second money. The Pole fell at the fivo furlongs in the last round. Bonny was pullod up, as was Vestal, and Appin and Sportsman both fell. The winner, who was the early favourite, put up new figures for the race, and could have done much better bad he been pushed. Scobie handled him well, and his lepping was perfect. Birkful was a very hot order in a field of twelve, which contested the Hack Hurdles. . Toreador led the field for fivo furlongs, when he gave way to St. Gate and Awahou. At the mile-post Vascular was well behind, and was being ridden very hard. Down the back St. Gate led Awahou, Birkful, and Jolie Fille. At the half-mile the favourite was beaten, and. St. Gate led into the straight, where Doon and Awahou joined in. A fine finish between the two latter saw Awahou win by a neck. St. Gate was close up, and then came Jolie Fille and General Webb. The two last-named will do better later on,

Bv general consent it was not a strong. , field in the Century Hurdles. Sir Don-' ■ aid, Birkful, and Toreado were the eleventh-hour scratchings. At the start Hereford and Queen's Post led Gleuorchy with the field strung out. " Hereford was soon displaced, and Queen's Post took the field along at a smart pace. At a mile to go 6he was still in command from Glenorchy, Styrax, arid Black Northern. Dowii tli« back Waiputioa moved up, and was momentarily dangerous, but Styrax ran up to Queen's Post across the bottom, and jumping the last fence on terms, he won in the run home. Black Northern was close up third, and then case Waipunoa, Glenorchy, Cloudy Dawn, Aratiatia, and Aruake. The withdrawal of Merry Roe saw Kmperador made a very warm order in the Connolly Handicap, but he pulled very hard on the journey, and after a rough passage was beaten into fourth plac*. Bonny Rigg mado the running to the turn, where Maniaroa and Ladv Louisa ran up to her, and in the finish the latter won nicely, while llaniaroa was a halflength clear of Bonny Rigg. Emperador, Leonta, and Gold Soult were close up. There was a .very big field in the concluding event, and all the well-fancied candidates, except Gold Fran, drew bad marbles. Client, the favourite, and Salvia "were enabled to win from the outside. Boldstroke led to the three furlongs, where the favourite took charge, and was not bothered on the journey, Salvia was well clear of Gold Fran. Maltegarde pot badly away. The winner camo from a long way back, and is a muchimproved horse. Gallnpin failed badly, I but Gold Fran was unlucky. the results. (By Telegraph- Pre?.* Association.' Wanganui, May 20.
