The Hon. R. H. Rhodes (PostmasterGeneral) went south by the ferry steamer last night. Among the through passengers from San Francisco to Sydney by the Marama are Lieut. H. B. M'Murdo, Mr. J. C. Morrell, the Rev. P. O'Shea, and Dr. and Mrs. C. Nicholson. Mr. A. G. Clarke, who has been auditing for the Government at Rarotonga, returned from the Islands hy ; the Marania yesterday. Mr. E. Quinlan, of the Wellington Harbour Board's staff, has been advised that his son, Private Ernest Roy Quinlan, of the Main Expeditionary Force, has been wounded. The wounded man was the foreman of a joinery works in Rotorua- before he wore khaki. Ho has another brother, Stanley, at tho Dardanelles, and his elder brother, Mr. Edward Quinlan. who earned a. commission in the South African war, leaves for England next Friday to join the British Army. Mr. C. V. T. Triekett. well-known in the London oil and colour trade, arrived from San Francisco by the Marama yesterday. Dr. J. Falconer Brown, of Epsom, has accepted a captaincy in the medical branch of tho Expeditionary Forces. He will leave Auckland for Trenthani to-day. It is understood', says an exchange, that Dean Hills will be appointed to the vacancy on the Board of Governors of Canterbury College caused by tho death of Bishop Grimes. The Wellington Hospital Board has accepted the resignations of Senior Nurses Clarke and Fabian. Nurse Margaret M'Kenzie has been appointed nurse for the Wellington Dispensary for Diseases of the Chest. She is at present on the staff of the Wellington Hospital. Our Masterton correspondent telegraphs that the Eev. W..Hands, of Tinui, has been appointed to the charge of the Waverley-Waitotara parish. He will be succeeded by the Rev. B. D. .Ashcroft, curate of St. Matthew's, Masterton. On the motion of the Mayor (Mr. C. C. Crump) a vote of sympathy was passed by the Onslow Borough Council last night to Mr. A. A. S, Meiiteath in the death of his son in the .Dardanelles operations. The death of Captain A teo Frandi was the subject of a motion of condolence passed by the executive committee of the Orphans' Club. Sergeant-Major Artificer Andrew Johnston, Royal New Zealand Artillery, has been awarded 'the Meritorious Service Medal. Mr. Leonard A. Bachelder "has been appointed vice-consul of the United States of America at Auckland. Maior Arthur James Childs, 2nd (South Canterbury) Regiment and Lieutenant William Robert Purdom, of the 6ame regiment, have been awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long-Service Medal. The death is announced from Sydney of Mr. Charles Godfrey Knight., eldest son of the late Charles Knight, F.R.C.S., and father of Dr. Prendergast Knight, of this City. The late Mr. Knight, who died at his residence "Tho Warrens," Hunter's Hilt, near Sydney, N.S.W., was 72 years of age. lie waa born in Adelaide, Souih Australia, in 1544, and came to New Zealand in the brig Enterprise with his parents two years later: Educated at Auckland, he subsequently entered the service of the Government as an officer of the Marine Survey Department, and was later appointed aotuary of the Government Lifo tnsuranco Department on its initiation, Later he left the service of the New Zealand Government to assume the general managership in New Zealand of tho Equitable Life Assurance Company of the United States of America, and when that company withdrew from theDominion he became general manager of the Temperance and General Mutual Life Office in Melbourne, from which position, he retired in 1901. The late Mr. Knight was among those who were wrecked in tho Union Company's steamer Waikare in the West Coast Sounds. He was a keen bowler, and was at different times treasurer and captain of the Hunter's Hill Bowling "• Club. The members of the family are Dr. J. Prendergast Knight, of Wellington ; Mr. Arthur Knight, of Sydney; Mrs. Rowlands, of Kirandera; 31 rs. Glasgow, of Parramatta (Sydney): Mrs Sydney Mack, of Sydney; and the Misses (2) Knight, also of Sydney.

Dr. It. H. Makgill, who lor runny years past lias occupicd the position of distriot health officer at Auckland, recently offered his services to tho War Office. The offer has been accepted, and Dr. Makgill, having obtained leava of absence from the l'ublio Sorrico Commissioner, will shortly learo fur England. Dr. _ Makgill has been dcr i tailed for special work in tho chemistry department, and he will join his uncle, Dr. John Scott Haldano, F.R.S., a well-known medical specialist., who has recently beon investigating matters connected with the use of poisonous gases by the Germans on tho Continent. Dr. Haldano is a brother of l.rvrd Haidane, Lord Chancellor, and former-, ly Secretary for War. Dr. Makgill served in a medical capacity with tha 2ud ■ Gordon Highlanders in tho Boor war.

Mr. Henry Wrigley, on old and highly-respected resident of Wellington, passed away at his residence at Newtown on Wednesday, in his eighty-ninth year. The deceased, who was a native of camo to New Zealand in 1858, and after carrying on business in Wellington fon several years he- engaged in farming in tlie Sandon district. For the last twenty years he had resided in Wellington. He was probably the oldest of the Methodist Church in New Zealand, having received his first ticket of membership in 1543, and continued in full connection with the Church over since. During his association with the old Manners Street church, he filled most of the positious that are open to laymen. Mrs. \\ r ■ ley died in 1867. _ The surviving members of his family are: Mrs. W. J. Helyer, of Wellington; Mrs. Herbert Sanson, of Eastbourne ; and Mr. S. H. Wrigley, of Messrs. Levin and Co.'s staff.

Mr. F. Bennett (who has been appointed Master of the new Brittoniart Street School at Berhatnpore) was entertained at a social of the Knori Bowling Club on .Tuesday. The president-, Mr. B. G. H. Burn (Mayor of Karori), and Mr. C. Cathie referred in complimentary terms to Mr. Bennett's work In connection with the establishment of the club in 1003. The president expressed the best thanks of the club to him, mid wished liira even' success in his new distriot. On behalf of the club ho presented him with a handsome silver and gold service as a memento of tho occasion, and as a mark of the respect in which he was held by the club. In reply, Mr. Bennett briefly reviewed the history of tho club and congratulated members on the position it occupied among Wellington clubs. He thanked members for conferring upon him the highest honours of the club and also for their beautiful present, and expressed regret that he was compelled to sever his activo connection with the club.

The number of stock slaughtered at the citv abattoir during last month was 8784, comprising 546 cows, 597 bullocks, 90 bulls, 6280 sheep, 1040 lambs, 1(31 calves, and 70 pigs, and of thjs number 113 worn condemned.
