THE SYDNEY BOAT. This week's Sydney boat, the Moeraki, arrived in port yesterday shortly before noon, and berthed at the Queen's Wharf. On the run across the vessel experienced strong north-east winds and heavy seae. The large cargo brought was a general one, and after the discharge of the local portion the vessel proceeds to Lyttelton to-day. The Moeraki will not return to Wellington, but leaves Lyttclton at 5 p.m. to-morrow for Sydney.
KOROMIKO ARRIVES. Tho Union Company's turret-decked collier Koromiko arrived in port at about 3 o'clock yesterday morning after an uneventful trip acfoss the Tasman Sea.. The vessel berthed at the Glasgow Wharf and commenced discharge of her cargo of Newcastle coal. A fairly easy time was experienced on tho trip across until four days out from Newcastle, when a heavy head sea was met with, and the vessel shipped a, considerable amount of water. The weather moderated when the collier drew near to Wellington. The Koromiko will return to Newcastle on completion of the diechargo of her cargo.
NGAKUTA'S NEW DUTIES. The collier Ngakuta, which, has for some time past been regularly engaged in the West. Coast-Wellington-Lyttelton trade, la to proceed to Sydney with a. full cargo of produce at the end of the week. The collier has been put to her new duties owing to the scarcity of Home boats in these waters at the present time requiring bunker coal. The Ngakuta is due at Timaru from Greymouth to-day. After discharging some 500 tons of coal there she will load produco for Sydney, leading Timaru on Friday afternoon. It is profcahle that the vessel will call in at Wellington to replenish her bunkers, and that she will proceed from Sydney to Newcastle in order to take in a cargo of coal for Auckland.
THE WAIHORA. The Union Company's Calcutta trader, the Waihora, arrived at Wellington at about 4 p.m. yesterday from Auckland. The vessel will probably leave for southern ports to-day after she lias discharged the local portion of her cargo.
NEW ' STEAMER OMASA. The steamer Omana, which is a new craft, on her way to New Zealand, left Cape Town some weeks ago in continuation of her passage from London to New Zealand. The Omana, which i 6 under the command of Captain Carse, has been specially designed for. timber and coal business between Australia and New Zealand.
OANASTOTA DELAYED. Cabled advice has been received in Sydney from New York stating that . tho 6teamer Canostota, which was just on the point of sailing for New Zealand and Australian ports, will be delayed for three weeks owing to a fire which has just occurred amongst the cargo. Apparently tho Are is not of a very serious nature, otherwise the steamer would not have been able to procced in such a short time. 'MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. During the absence of Captain A. M. Edwin, of the Wahine, who has had to come ashore on account of illnes6, Captain H. Williams will take command, of the vessel. . . , ~ Captain Houghton is in command of th© A. and A. Line's chartered steamer Invortay and has with him the following offi-cers-.—Messrs. J. Perry (chief), H. P. Beale (second), A. J. Barney (third), and Stewart (chief engineer). Mr. Winter, chief engineer of the Kanna, has come ashore, and Mr. A. li. Wickes lias taken his place.
Mr, Dawson, late second engineer of the Kflinpoi. has rejoined thot vessel. Mr. S. Dickie, who took his place, has now reverted to his former position of third engineer. A private telegram has been received hy Mr. V. Fyke, assistant purser 'of the Maori, which states that. Mr. C. C. Marshall. purser of the vessel, is still in a Chri?tohureh private hospital, though his condition is not considered serious.
The cargo steamer Wyandotte, which has been bought by the Union Company, arrived in Sydney from San Francisco last week with a. big cargo. During her stay in Sydney the vessel changed her name, and in future will be known as the Waimarino.
The steamer Hexham,' which has been under charter to the Union S.S. Company of New Zealand, ha<= completed that engagement,l and has been handed over to her owners at Newcastle,
Messrs. Hud-dart, Parker's new steamer nebburn, a sister vessel to the Goulburn, now on her maiden trip to Australia, arrived at New York on May 2, where she will 10-axi general merchandise for .the Commonwealth.
The steamer Navarino (5103 tons) is to lead case oil at New York for N r ew Zealand porte.
At the present moment, states the Sydney "Shipping List," British shipbuilders* quotations for new tonnage are now based on about £10 a ton for cargo steamers of good ordinary specification and of large size of 7000 tons and upwards, and for smaller cording to sire. Even <it- these phenomenally high priccs few builders can deliver before the middle of 1916, whilst for small vessels builders do not feel disposed vessels anywhere from £10 10s. to £13, acto quote at- all.
The Wootton left- Lyttelton at 6 o'clock Inst night with a full load of produce for this port. She is duo here to-day, and after discharging sails for Nydia Pay, whore she will load timber for Wellington.
