SOUTHLAND WINTER SHOW

Invercarglll, May 18. The annual Southland Metropolitan A. and P. winter show opened to-day in fine weather. The entries constitute an easy record. The cheese display is tho largest yet seen in any show in the Dominion, and the competition was of the keenest character. The quality was exceptionally good, and the points allotted were unusually high, ranging from 91 to .96£. The judges had made the minutest examination m making the awards.

Fat sheep and fat cattle were shown for the first time. The ■ classes were woll supported, and the entries all round were very fine. Roots are not as good as in most of tho previous shows, owing to tho wet season, potatoes, however, are an exception, the entries numerically and from a quality point of view, being very fine. The other sections are well filled.

The Agricultural Department's. exhibit is one of the features of the show, and is.the largest' of the kind yet exhibited by the Department. It commanded great attention, and earned favourablo'comment from farmers.

The show will extend over four days, and in conjunction with it an industrial exhibition "is being held, the exhibits being thoroughly representative of local and Dominion industries. ,
