The brilliant success of the British First. Army in its initial assault on the German line from Festubert to Richebourg-L'Avoue is being further extended by a vigorous development of the offensive, and further achievements, with heavy loss to the enemy, are recordod in to-day's news. The story of the first attack is graphically told in an interesting dispatch from the front. The battle of La Bassee, we are told, gave the famous Black Watch Regiment «f Highlanders a. glorious opportunity for adding to their splendid traditions, and the story of their gallantry makes inspiring reading. The battle-cry now is: "Remember the Lusitania!" and by all accounts the anger of the British over the pirate murderers has inspired a relentless fury in their attacks. The enemy has now evacuated his position on the Western side .of the Yser Canal—the only alternative to being cut off altogethei. In the Eastern theatre the Russian colossus is solidly holding the line of the San against the great Austro-German attack, and awaits the future with optimism and confidence in ultimate victory. In the Bukowina region, 20,000 Austrians have fallen into the hands of the Russians. There is a comparative dearth of news from Italy. Signor Giolitti is about to make a public statement, and if the worst comes to tho worst, he says, he will declare for war. The news from the Dardanelles to-day includes another interesting dispatch from Mr. Ashmead Bartlett, who bestows unstinted praise on the colonials for their dash and tenacity in face of a galling fire, and also pictures some of the difficulties of the task w-hich lies before tho Allios. The Australian Commander, Brigadier-General Bridges, has been wounded. There is further news of the Zeppelin raiders, not the least gratifying item in. which is the reported destruction by gunfire of the Zeppelin which visited Calais.
