THE TURF
NOTES AND COMMENTS
[By Glexcoe.]
Tho Wanganui and North Otago meetings are Bet down for decision this week. Both meetings commence to-morrow. Patrons of the first-mimed meeting can leave by the Main Trunk express tonight and get an early train from Palmerston North in the morning. The racing commences at noon, and the card will l)o run through by 4.15 p.m. The acceptances received are of a very satisfactory nature, and the Connolly Handicap will seo Merry Roe, limperador, Leonta, and Bonny Helen in action. In the Borough Handicap, which is the opening event, speedy ones like King Lupin, Hoy, and I'layoff are engaged. The Century Hurdle-; has un acceptance of fourteen, but Birkful and Toreador may be reserved for the Hack Hurdles, in which a promising recruit in Awahou is down to take part. All the fancied candidates have stood their ground in the Wanganui Steeples. Great interest will be taken ill this race, as it is likely to throw some light on the result of races to c.ome.
Whilst being schooled at Riccarton on Saturday Killaloo ran off ;it one of the fences, but the others he jumped well. He is not likely to try to get off in company, and he should do well at Ornnaru to-morrow, where the company is not so strong.
The Blenheim-owned Hoyal Sleeves has been sent to Oamaru, where he is engaged in several sprint races. The halfmile event on the second day should suit the black gelding very well.
An effort was made to secure the services of A. Oliver and W. Bell for 6evoral owners at Oamaru to-morrow, but both horsemen are engaged at the Wanganui meeting.
It is probable that the two mares, Charmilla and Honesty, will be left at the Elderslie Stud at the conclusion of the racing at Oamaru this week.
The Trentham light-weight jockey, H. Lowe, has gone south to ride Immer in th» Oamaru Cup. The Martian mare has been galloping very pleasingly at headquarters, and her itrainer expects her to give a good account of herself under such a light impost.
The Sydney owner, Mr. F. Merton, indulged in a little pardonable humour when nominating for the A.J.C. meeting, which is being got up in aid of the Belgian Fund. He took out six nomiuations for <the meeting, anil the horses entered included Flavinus in the Hurdles and Coat o' Mail in the Steeples. The former is at the stud and the latter has never seen a fence. He also desired to enter an ancient gelding for the Juvcnilo Handicap, but the conditions of the race debarred the entry. Another owner in the person of Mr. R. W.' Clancy nomin. ated all his team in the hurdle race.
There were some very short prices on the second day at Eginont, and in. one event the supporting of the first ana second horse restiited in the punter just getting his money back.
There iB little chance. of Merry Trick fulfilling her North Otago engagements, as shj lias been showing signs of lameness in her work.
The North Island-bred jumper Kurnalpi, who has been in Australia for some time, opened his winning account by annexing the Hurdle Handicap at the Canterbury Park meeting on Saturday last. Daystar's son will probably be a competitor in some of the big hurdle events at the winter meeting of the V.R.C. and A.J.C.
Handicapper J. E. Henrys , and the local owner, Mr. 11. Whitney (who lias several horses racing at the Oamaru meeting) went south last night.
A. J. McFlinn, who at present heads the list of winning riders over fences, will be on Black Northern and The Pole at Wanganui to-morrow. Other riders iu tho Steeplechase are—Jackman (A. Ward), Dorando (A. Gordon), Addnought (if'. Tutchea), Bonny (J. Sbaw), Daylight Bill (W. Scobie), Appin (L. Traill), Vestal (C. Scott), and Sportsman (E. 'Copestake).
Riders in the Connolly Handicap will be—Merry Hoe (J. Buchanan), limperador (C. Emerson), Leonta (C. Price), Bonny Helen (W. Price), Multiply (B. Deeley), Tinopai (H. Robinson), Gold Soult (M. M'Donald), Lady Louisa (E. Manson), Bonny Rigg (H. Young), and Maniaioa (U. Reed)."
According to accounts from Wanganui Awahou has not been lumping as well' in his recent schooling efforts as he was a fortnight go. Generally speaking, the progeny of Mahaki jump well, ami after a race or two over the battens • Awahou will probably be no exception to the rule.
F. E. Jones is to ride Ogier in the Oamaru Cup, which is to be decided tomorrow. ti RACES IN WAR TIME. QUESTION OF PROHIBITION. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) London, May 17. Mr. Asquith (the Prime Minister), in reply to a question in the House of Commons, said he was considering the question of the prohibition .of Tace meetings during the war, but he doubted whether legislation would be necessary. WANGANUI TRAINING NOTES. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Wanganui, May 18. The weather was fine for training operations this morning. El Gallo and General Webb shaped well over tho hurdles.
Emperador and Bonny Bigg were too good for Banksia over a mile in lmin. 43Jsec.
Dorando, Appin, and Addnought went over the fences together, jumping well. Aratiatia jumped the hurdles, and Agatha Green the fences well.
