DEFENCE STAFF OFFICERS NOT SHIRKERS

UNJUST CHARGES. "I wish to call attention to certain very unjunfc toforonces that have been made, no doubt thoughtlessly, to those officers of the Defence StafT who are remaining in New Zealand," said the Hon. J. Allen, Minister of Defence, to a reporter yesterday. "Some people havo been calling attention to the fact that they have not gone to tho front. Specific instances of this sort of thing have been brought under ray notice. What 1 wish to say on tho subject is this—that these officers are all eating their hearts out to get away to the front, and it is not in accordance with their own wishes, but the Government's wishes, that they are remaining here. They are not staying of their own desire; we are retaining them. We are retaining Hiem because we must have some men here to carry on the instruction of the drafts of reinforcements, and to carry on our Territorial scheme. It' is grossly unfair to ' suggest that these officers are staving at home for their own reasons. They can not go because-we can't let them go. We need them for other work here. The suggestion that they are shirkers or anything of the sort is totally untrue."
