PRICE OF SUGAR
QUESTION BEFORE CCMMODIES CONFERENCE
(Rec. May 17, 9.30 p.m.)
Sydney, May 17. A conference of the Queensland, Victorian, and South Australian Commodities, Boards has been held with the object of fixing the price of sugar. Mr. E. W. Knox, general manager of the Colonial Sugar Company, attended the conference and gave evidence that the sugar stocks in ■ Sydney and Melbourne would be exhausted by the end of July; Brisbane's supply v.ould coaso at an earlier date, and Adelaide's later. He estimated tlio shortage at 75,000 tens. His company believed that it would be necessary to import from 75,000 to 125,000 tons to carry on with until July, 1916.
Mr. Knox maintained that the Commission had no power to fix the price. Judge Edmunds asked Mr. Knox if ho objected to the Commission inquiring a.bout the company's profits in past years. Mr. Knox thought it quite futile and unnecessary.
The conference agreed tliat the company's needs to tho end of August only should be supplied by importation, which, ought to result in a reasonable profit to those concerned.
It was admtted that the business should be protected. Hie conference intimated that it would fix the price.
PRICE TO REMAIN UNALTERED. (Rec. May 18, 1.40 a.m.) Sydney, May 17. The Conference decided not to alter the price of sugar.
