SMALLER SHINGLE RIVERS
AN INTERESTING REPORT. (Br TolegrftDb.-I'ress Association.! Timaru, May 17. An interesting report has been furnisliqd by Mr. AV. Purkert, Government Engineer, on tbe ehango wrought iu the smaller shingle rivers, such as the Waihi and Orari, through a larger quantity of shingle let loose from hills by tho turning tussock and other vegetation, by the choking of the lower courses, and by the planting of willows at certain points. The original river channels have been iilled and every Hood causes the overflow of the neighbouring lands and a risk of tho change of the course. Mr. Eurkert recommends abolishing river boards having control of sections of rivers, and giving tho whole control to a council, with power under engineering advice, and with the approval of ■i" Public Works Department to determine) a permanent course, and tako such measures as may be necessary to conlino the .stream to that course.
