PRELATE'S LETfER TO PRIME
| ' MINISTER (Rec. May 18, 0.35 a.m.) London, May 17. The Arohbisop of Canterbury, in a letter to Mr. Asquitk, iPrime Minister, deprecated the senseless riots or the desire for retaliation for giis poisoning, and hoped that Britain would never lower herself to tho enemy's level. He believed in the nation's righteous indignation taking a worthier form in a resolve to all throw in every ounce of strength against the enemy* Mr. Asquith, in his reply, emphasised the German General Staff's deliberate adoption of the weapon of ..cruel, wan-t-on outrage, which had aroused tho righteous and consuming indignation which , was unparalleled in our Instory. He welcomed the suggestion of the Church to enforce on members the primary duty to contribute to the national service in every form to the Worthiest caußc wherein the Empire's . fortuuos arid conscience wore erer engaged. ,
